In spite of all of its persecutions, the Christian church has prevailed. According to available records, the “church spirit” began hovering over the small community of Macon, North Carolina in the year 1877 and a few devout f
ollowers, led by Brothers Ruffin Moore and Joe Boyd, began holding services under a bush-harbor. Two years later in (1879), their efforts had so impressed and won others that they were able to build a log cabin in which to worship. On December 21, 1884, a larger tract of land was purchased from James W. Harris and wife, Mollie E. Harris on the Harristown Road (See copy of Deed, page 5) for the sum of twenty dollars ($20.00) in order to construct a better building. During this time, the Reverend Annanias Buck of Halifax County, an old pioneer minister, Providentially came on the scene and officially organized what came to be The Mount Zion Baptist Church, The name “Mount Zion” was chosen because of it’s location.
