The sanctuary was quiet, the flowers arranged with care, and the people gathered were few in number but rich in devotion. We sat with Romans 12, Paul’s image of the body with many members, each one different, each one necessary. No part of the body gets to say it doesn’t belong because it isn’t shaped like another part.

I found myself thinking about our region while I sat there. Forty-eight congregations, and no two of them alike. Some meet in sanctuaries like Hiltonia’s, steeple pointing skyward, worship at eleven sharp. Others meet differently, sound differently, gather differently. That is not a problem to solve. It is the body doing what the body was made to do.

We are not meant to look the same to be one. We are meant to need each other. A congregation like Hiltonia, faithful in a place many will never think to look, is as much a part of this body as any of us. I left grateful for the reminder.

A congregation in transition still gathers, still sings, still listens for what comes next. I had the privilege of preaching at First Christian Church of Atlanta in Tucker, and talking with some of their leaders about what the future might hold.

It takes a particular kind of faith to keep showing up in the middle of not knowing who your next pastor will be. This congregation has that faith. I saw it in the room.

Please join me in praying for First Christian Church of Atlanta as they continue this season of discernment, and for Rev. Doug Ivey as he begins his time as their interim. Transition is holy work. It deserves our attention, not just our patience.

Grateful to be walking alongside this part of our regional family.

The Spirit is present in these young people.

This weekend our Youth Advisory Council gathered at Camp Christian, teenagers and the adults who walk alongside them, doing the work of planning ahead. They are shaping next year’s Regional Youth Assembly, set for February 19 to 21, 2027.

This group of youth and adults are gathering with their whole selves. There is a difference between showing up because you have to and showing up the way this group did, present, engaged, invested in planning for young people they have not met yet.

Registration details are coming soon. For now, just know that the next assembly is already being carried by good hands.

The Proclamation Project is thrilled to release our eagerly anticipated Disciples Identity curriculum. A companion to the book We Call Ourselves Disciples, this resource is designed for congregations to grow deeper in their identity and connections within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The multimedia resource is adaptable for a variety of contexts, featuring six weeks of materials that can be used as a sermon series, a small group study, a new member class, and more.

Chicago in August, a room full of colleagues from across the church, wrestling honestly with what makes a congregation vital.

Disciples Home Missions gathered regional ministers for a workshop on congregational vitality and innovation, and one of the first things we did together was name it out loud. Not the version of vitality that shows up in a growth chart, but the fuller list we built as a room: willing participation, tending to seniors, justice work, spiritual growth, joy, a sense of wonder. Vitality that includes numbers without being reducible to them.

I came home with more questions than conclusions, and that feels like the right place to land. Grateful for the colleagues in that room, and grateful the Georgia Region gets to think about vitality alongside the wider church instead of alone.
