Day one of CYF week at Camp Christian, and I am already grateful I came.

I spent the morning meeting high schoolers, hearing their names, learning a little about who they are and where they come from. That first-day energy is something I never quite know how to describe. A little nervous. A little loud. A little more open than any of them would probably admit. And underneath all of it, something genuinely hopeful.

These young people are going to make friendships this week that will outlast the summer. They are going to ask questions they have never said out loud before. They are going to hear something in worship or in conversation that lands in a place words will not quite cover. That is what camp does. It creates the conditions for real things to happen.

I am honored to serve as keynoter this week and to walk alongside these young people as they gather, settle in, and begin to find each other. Grateful for the counselors and staff who make this possible, and for every family that trusted us with their teenager.

This morning I had the privilege of preaching at First Christian Church in Atlanta and spending time with their congregation. While there, I also toured the church’s newly renovated basement, which now serves as a home for Bliss Gould Child Development⁠.

What a wonderful example of a congregation living out its mission beyond Sunday morning. By opening its facilities and partnering with a community organization dedicated to the care and development of children, First Christian Church is demonstrating what it means to be a faithful neighbor.

The church’s investment in this partnership is creating space where children can learn, families can thrive, and relationships can be built. It was encouraging to see firsthand how a congregation’s facilities can become a resource for the wider community and a tangible expression of God’s love.

Thank you to the people of First Christian Church for your hospitality and for the inspiring work you are doing in partnership with your community. This is outreach at its best.

Something happens when a child who just finished kindergarten walks into camp for the first time, hand in hand with someone who loves them.

This evening I had the joy of having dinner with the campers and adults of Genesis Camp, our camp designed for children just out of kindergarten who come to camp alongside a parent or grandparent. Watching that first introduction to camp, watching it happen in the company of someone they already trust, is a particular kind of gift. There is no rush to it. No pressure to be ready on their own. Just welcome, and a hand to hold.

I love what this says about how we think about camp in the Christian Church in Georgia. We are not waiting for children to be old enough to come alone. We are building the path early, with adults who show up to walk it alongside them. That kind of care leaves a mark.

Grateful for every camper, every parent, every grandparent who made the drive this week. This is how a love for camp begins.

Freedom that arrives two years late is still freedom worth proclaiming.

That is the heart of Juneteenth, the day enslaved people in Texas finally received word, in 1865, that they were free. The gospel has always known something about delayed freedom and the cost of withheld good news. We believe in a God who liberates, even when the world is slow to let that liberation reach everyone it belongs to.

This history is not separate from ours as Disciples. Our movement traces a thread back to 1830, when African American congregations organized their own convention even as the broader church struggled to live into the gospel's full demand for equality. That work became the National Convocation, and it remains a vital part of who we are as a denomination. In 1968, in the wake of Dr. King's assassination, our church committed itself formally to the work of reconciliation, and that commitment has continued through our Pro-Reconciliation/Anti-Racism ministry ever since.

So today is not just a national holiday for us. It is a reminder that the table we share as Disciples was built, in part, by African American Christians who refused to let the church's failures define their faith or their belonging. We are still learning what it means to be a church of the open table in full. Juneteenth asks us to keep learning.

Today’s Monday Mindfulness

There is always something happening at Camp Christian. This week is no different.

This morning I had the privilege of opening camp week with the Chrysalis and Junior campers, sharing a few words of welcome and a keynote to get things started. We sat with Psalm 139 together and talked about what it means to go through wilderness times. The high moments and the hard ones. The places where you wonder if God is still there. And the good news that in every single one of those places, God is present. Not waiting at the end of the wilderness, but right there in the middle of it.

And then I reminded these kids, and the counselors standing beside them, that they did not end up at Camp Christian by accident. God created each of them for such a time as this.

Look at these faces. I rest my case.

Grateful for every counselor, director, and volunteer who makes weeks like this possible. More to come.

Revive. Reset. Resist.

That's the theme of the 29th Biennial Session of the National Convocation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and I have to tell you, those three words felt less like a conference slogan and more like a prayer by the time the Convocation was done.

I arrived in Dallas, I checked in and received my badge, my bag, and a full calendar. I'm leaving with something harder to put into words.

Here's what I know: even when your faith is full, and your spirit is steady, there is something that happens when you dare to step into a community that worships differently than you do. Not to observe it from a safe distance. To actually be in it. To be welcomed at a table that was already set before you got there. To hear scripture preached in a voice that isn't yours, to feel the Spirit move in ways your tradition didn't teach you to expect.

When we dare to really meet people where they are, something opens up in us. We discover that the body of Christ is so much wider, so much richer, so much more alive than any one of us can hold on our own. That is not a threat to who we are. It is an invitation to become more fully who God made us to be.

What you'll find is that God was already there. Long before you arrived. And you won't leave the same, not because you did something, but because you received something you didn't know you needed.

That's exactly what this first Convocation did for me.
I was honored to spend this weekend alongside these wonderful people from the Christian Church in Georgia, and I couldn't be prouder to be your Regional Minister.

Georgia showed up. And Georgia is beautiful.
