Long time member of both Wesley Church and our Sanctuary Choir, the late Te-Hsui Ma (1924-2015) has been posthumously included in the Stanford/Elsevier "Top 2% Most Influential Scientists" list, which identifies researchers with significant citation impact across disciplines.
Te was professor of biological sciences at Western Illinois University for 32 years. While at WIU, he created the Tradescantia Micronucleus Pollution Detection System, a bioassay using Tradescantia to monitor pollution, a system used in 40 countries. He ran his on-site testing and research lab, which networked with other laboratories worldwide using his system, and presented workshops in over 40 countries.
Te authored numerous scientific papers and was a member of the Environmental Mutagen Society and the International Program of Plant BioAssays under the United Nations. He organized a NATO workshop, which brought 40 participants to WIU in the summer of 2004.
Among Te’s many gifts was his ability as a visual artist. You can see an example of his beautiful artwork in our choir room, a painting of operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti, which he gifted to Wesley’s music ministry just a few years before his death.
