Just before Stephen is stoned to death, he is given one final opportunity to speak. Rather than defend himself, he boldly proclaims the gospel. He speaks so boldly that it enrages the self-righteous crowd around him. Why does the gospel offend some people? Could there be places where it offends us too?

Watch "Stiff Necks and Hard Hearts" to learn more about Stephen's message, the condition of the human heart, and the hope found in responding to God's truth.

The challenges below help us pursue Christ-like relationships at home and live on mission with those around us.

Family: As a family, talk with your children about the difference between a hard heart and a soft heart. Why is a soft heart so important for receiving the gospel? You can use Jesus’ parable of the soils to discuss the different types of responses people have to the gospel message. Follow this up by asking your children if they believe their hearts are hard or soft? What evidence can they give for their answer?

Community: Pray for two or three people within your sphere of influence who are currently displaying a stiff neck or a hard heart toward God. Ask God to break them of their self-righteousness. You can also use this as a chance to pray for greater boldness to share your faith, just like Stephen.

If you’ve watched this week’s sermon, the questions below can help you keep processing what God is teaching you. Journal your thoughts, and feel free to share insights or questions in the comments.

1. Consider the character of Stephen in this story. What are some lessons we can learn from his stance amid great opposition? How does Stephen’s persecution resemble that of Jesus?

2. As you survey the landscape of cultural Christianity in America, how do you see people putting their confidence for salvation in the wrong place? Where do you see these tendencies in your own relationship with the Lord?

3. Why was Israel’s pride in the temple misplaced? What did it reveal about the way they related to God? What might be some parallels be to our own day and time?

4. Have you ever experienced resistance from someone seeking to defend their own self righteousness? What happened? How did you respond? What did you learn from this interaction? What would you do differently next time?

Prayer Prompt: Almighty God, thank You for saving a sinner like me! Help me to be bold to share the good news of the gospel with others, even when the opposition against me grows increasingly heavy. Melt the hard hearts of the self-righteous and grant them salvation in Your perfect timing. Amen.

This Sunday evening will be an opportunity for our members to reflect on the past year as we remember the many ways God has shown His faithful goodness to us as a church. All NCBC members are encouraged to join in this important hour as we look to the year ahead with prayerful anticipation of what’s next in the life of New Castle. Important updates, reviewing and approving the upcoming budget, member restoration, and a new opportunity for our Goodfield ministry are among the topics to be presented.

Childcare will be provided for infants through 5th grade. Please sign up for childcare here: https://newcastle.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/3631368

These questions are a simple way to continue reflecting on Sunday’s sermon and growing in your walk with Jesus. Take some time to journal and join the conversation in the comments if you’d like.

1. In what sense is the story of Scripture a historical record of God’s plan to commune with people? How do we see this story unfold from the beginning to the end?

2. What are some of the practical ways we commune with the triune God? Is there something you hadn’t previously considered before? Where do you personally need to grow in communion with God?

3. What does the relationship of the Trinity teach us about the nature of love? How should this shape the way we approach our human relationships?

4. As you look back over the past three weeks, how has your love for and understanding of the triune God increased? What has been particularly helpful or insightful to you?
