On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
John 7:40‭-‬44 NIV

There are a variety of responses to Jesus’ message. Some want to crown Him, others want to kill Him. Overall, there’s a lot of confusion about His intentions. Why make these bold, public declarations? Why do all these incredible miracles? The Jewish leaders were suspicious that Jesus wanted to overthrow them. Others believed He came to save them from the Romans. Even His own brothers initially doubted Him. Clearly, there was a lot of confusion that led to division.

This sounds a lot like our world today; there’s so much division because we are full of suspicion. When suspicion takes over, division follows. But it’s hard not to be suspicious when we have misplaced our confidence. See, the reason we can be okay in the craziness is because we trust Jesus. -21 days of Discipleship (Day 7)

Jesus turns to His closest friends and asks:

“You do not want to leave too, do you?” John 6:67 NIV

Peter replies for all 12 guys, saying:

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69 NIV
So, what do we do when following Jesus gets hard? Will we walk away? No. We will remind ourselves of who it is we’re following! Jesus has what we need—the words of eternal life.

Disciples of Jesus are called to an everyday dependence on Him. And when we realize who He is and what He offers, regardless of the difficulty, we will know it’s worth it. So worth it that we will become like Peter, wondering where else we could possibly go!

Challenge: Today, go back through this chapter and pick one other chapter we’ve already read. Highlight any descriptors in these passages regarding who Jesus is and what He came to offer us. Ask the Holy Spirit to create a desire for dependence in you as you think on those things today. - 21 Days of Discipleship (Day 6)

Jesus Himself said: “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!” John 5:39 NLT

Here’s the thing: Jesus doesn’t just want you to just know some things about Him; He wants you to really know Him.

The best way to do this is to get to know Him! We can all recognize that when we spend a lot of time with someone, we start to pick up and subconsciously practice the little things they say and do. How cool would it be if we started picking up Jesus stuff to the point where we found ourselves doing things He would do and saying things He would say? That, right there, is discipleship!

Challenge: Take some time to get to know Jesus today. Seriously, strike up a conversation, ask Him to speak, and see what happens! And as we continue to read through John, look for the little habits and traits of Jesus as you would in a friend. What is He always saying? What is His go-to approach or reaction? How can you pick up on and put those things into practice? - 21 Days of Discipleship (day 5)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
John 4:10 NIV

The meat of the fourth chapter of John focuses on an intentional encounter between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. To set the scene, it helps to understand that Jews and Samaritans despised each other.

Think about this: How terrible would a search and rescue team be if they let that little plastic “caution” tape block them from plunging into the forest to save someone? That would be insane! So why would we allow our own comfort or cultural lines to stop us from joining Jesus’ mission to seek and save the lost? Disciples of Jesus display His line-crossing love.

Challenge: Who is someone who’s difficult for you to love? Why? What line can you cross to reach out to them today? Now, do it! Send that message, write that note, apologize, forgive, ask to pray with them, etc. Display line-crossing love today. - 21 Days of Discipleship (Day 4)
