There may be people from your childhood who failed to keep the promises they made to you. There may be people in your family, at your work, or even in your church who have let you down as well. But God is faithful and will keep every promise He has made to you. If you tell yourself that God keeps His promises, your outlook will change. If you trust that the Lord will keep His assurances, you’ll experience greater rest.

When viewed through the benevolent and sovereign eyes of the Lord, our trials can be seen as occasions for joy. Joy is not happiness. Happiness is dependent on circumstances, while joy is not. True joy is an abiding confidence in Jesus and the assurance that He truly is working all circumstances together for our good.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, we’ll be content to trust the Lord’s direction and instruction. When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, we’ll demonstrate the kind of humility that invites Him to lead and guide. When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, we’ll be able to go through life in a state of contented appreciation for the work He has already accomplished on our behalf. He makes us capable of and comfortable with living in a kingdom we did not build.

Walking by sight means trusting in your abilities instead of trusting in Jesus. Doing so will eventually crush your spirit and prevent you from experiencing the blessings that come with learning to trust God in all circumstances. The Lord is in control of all things, and He can strengthen you through it and show you better things in coming days.

If you’re convinced that you’ll experience joy only when your circumstances become more comfortable, stop lying to yourself. True joy isn’t found in the momentary pleasures of this world; it is found through Jesus. And even though you haven’t seen Him yet, you can see what He’s doing. If you can learn to love Him more than you love the decomposing treasures of this world, He will help you see things in a brand-new way, and He will teach you to truly rejoice as your heart becomes fully convinced that He is working all things for His glory and your good.

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
