Saints,
Charlie Kirk is a Christian martyr. He was a political activist who wanted to restore open and honest debate on college campuses and in the public square. But his religious convictions were foundational to his political views. He proclaimed the gospel as much as he addressed pressing worldview questions. He was a cultural warrior and was assassinated for declaring the truth. He was not an extremist. His theological views were moderate but boldly declared. His worldview was considered unthreatening and rather “normal” just a few decades ago, but is now labeled as “hate,” a crime worthy of the death penalty to our enemies. Amid the rising tide of debased and increasingly violent paganism, Charlie joyfully and faithfully engaged anyone and everyone who was willing to talk. He was martyred for his proclamation of the truth.
His murder should make you angry. It is a righteous response. But we are called by God to be angry without sin (Ephesians 4:26). Showing equanimity right now means that we do not despair, we do not abandon our convictions or forgo the weapons of Charlie’s war, in exchange for right-handed power. Vengeance belongs to the Lord.
Charlie was a faithful husband and father. His weapons were faith, truth, and joy. And he was a once in a generational warrior. He died as he lived and is an example for all of us. We need that example more than ever. Courage. Grit. Unwavering proclamation of the truth. A willingness to lay down our lives for the gospel.
There is a time for peace and a time for war. A time to mourn and a time to dance (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). Now is a time to mourn. It is also a time for war. It has come upon us. Lament. Charlie Kirk was not assassinated in a quiet corner. He was shot in front of over 3,000 people, including his own children, on a college campus, with a microphone in his hand, answering questions about the truth. This should be a wakeup call to all of us regarding what we are up against. But also, an example of the most effective way of fighting the good fight of faith.
Kiss your spouse. Hug your kids. Keep your head on a swivel. Make wise threat assessments. Continue to go to church and worship the Lord. Continue to raise your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Love your neighbors and your enemies. Serve your community. COntinue to build up Redeemer Church Lynwood as a refuge and fortress. Remember that the spiritual struggle we are in needs our faithfulness and fortitude. We cannot back down, nor exchange the sword of the spirit for the sword of vengeance.
Be prepared to defend your family and the defenseless. Be excellent in your vocation. Seek every legal and political solution to the lawlessness running rampant in our Nation. Let our love overcome hate, hope overcome despair, selflessness overcome the narcissistic zeitgeist of our culture and let us not be silent. It is a time to speak. Just like Charlie Kirk.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Amen
