August 10 The Ledger Is Yours, Not Theirs
Scripture: Matthew 18:21-22 “Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
Peter thinks he’s being generous. Seven times. More than reasonable. More than anyone would ask. He’s proud of this number. You can hear it in the question.
Jesus takes the number and makes it uncountable. Seventy-seven. Seventy times seven in some translations. The point isn’t the math—it’s that he’s describing the end of the counting project entirely. You can’t keep a ledger at seventy times seven. The ledger becomes impossible. That’s the point.
Which means the ledger is the thing Jesus is after.
We are meticulous ledger-keepers. We know exactly how many times. We know the pattern. We know what they said and what they meant and what it reveals about who they actually are. We have documentation. We are right. The ledger is accurate.
And the ledger is heavy. Not because it’s wrong—it might be entirely right—but because you are the one carrying it. They’re not carrying it. They might not even know it exists. You’re the one who wakes up with it, who has it surface in unrelated conversations, who has let it quietly shape how much of yourself you’re willing to give to anyone, because you know now what people do.
Forgiveness at seventy times seven is not about them deserving it. It’s about what it’s costing you to keep the book.
Jesus doesn’t say what they did doesn’t matter. He says: how much longer are you going to be the one who pays for it?
The Weight of the Book:
Find the heaviest book in your house. A dictionary, a textbook, a big novel—something with real weight to it.
Hold it out in front of you with both arms extended. Hold it there.
While you’re holding it, think about who is on your ledger. The specific person. What they did. How many times. How right you are about all of it.
Hold the book until your arms hurt. Notice: they are not holding anything. You are.
Set it down. Feel your arms. That relief is immediate and physical and doesn’t require the other person to do a single thing.
You don’t have to forgive today. But you have to decide whether the ledger is serving you or just exhausting you. Putting the book down is not saying it didn’t happen. It’s deciding that you are done being the one who pays for it.
Reflection: Name the person and name the weight: what has maintaining this particular unforgiveness cost you—not them, you—in the currency of your actual life? And the harder question: is there something the ledger is protecting you from that you’re not ready to face yet? Sometimes we hold onto the wound because letting go of it means having to decide who we are without it.
