Well ... this it ... for now.

The website and page for Tide & Table will be going dormant for a while. As we settle into our new home in Jacksonville, I will be taking time to discern if Tide & Table is able to take root in this new location. I have learned not to plant before I have listened. But the possibility remains open and that feels exactly right.

I am grateful for every conversation, every gathering, every person who leaned in and wondered alongside me about what church could look like at the water's edge. To those of you who have read my reflections, shown up, prayed, and encouraged this experiment – thank you. You have been more gift than you know.

A couple of practical notes before I go: if you haven't yet subscribed to the blog on Substack.com () I encourage you to do so. And if you'd like to continue receiving the Monday devotion "Scripture from The Shore" send me a note at [email protected] and I'll make sure you're on the list.

And to Ellis – who arrived without asking whether the world was ready, without waiting for conditions to be acceptable, without consulting anyone's timeline but his own – thank you for pulling me toward Jacksonville and toward whatever God is doing next.

I'll keep writing. The tides are just changing.

With love and gratitude,
Nicole

In our efforts to be unstoppable and invulnerable in this age of social media perfection, we are actually doing the opposite of what Jesus reveals heroism to be. That the incarnation is the story of God choosing limitation over invincibility.

The point was something about the nature of heroism. That our aspirational superheroes — invulnerable, seamless, never running out of power — are actually the opposite of what Jesus reveals heroism to be. Embracing limitation breaks open space, allowing us the rest we so desperately need.

Acts 1:13-14: "When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying... They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers."

The early church wasn't founded on the brilliant or the certain. It was founded on the faithful and the tenacious. On people who kept showing up to a room together because that's all they knew to do.

As I prepare for my move to Jacksonville this week, the Tide & Table website and page will go dormant for a while as I discern how and when Tide & Table can be incorporated into a new context.

If you wish to continue to receive the Monday morning devotional, please send me an email at [email protected].

I will continue to write ... the tide is simply changing.

We are packing up and preparing for our move to Jacksonville. It has been interesting to ponder what we have that is "worthy" of this next journey. Read more on this week's blog: "The U-Haul goes to Jacksonville. The Court goes to 1965."

Acts 1:4 "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about."

We are not good at waiting. But Jesus said: no. Stay put. Something is coming that you can't manufacture or rush or organize into existence.

Friends, I have some joyful news!

I am moving to Jacksonville, Florida to be near my first grandchild, Ellis, who arrived this April and has already rearranged everything that matters.

Tide & Table's last day in the panhandle is May 15th. The Presbytery of Florida has allowed me to carry this work to Jacksonville, where I'll continue discerning whether and how it might take root in a new context.

A couple of practical notes: if you'd like to keep following my writing you can subscribe to my blog on substack.com (). And if you'd like to continue receiving the Monday devotional "Scripture from The Shore", send me a note at [email protected], and I'll make sure you're on the list.

Thank you for being part of this season. I'll keep writing—the tides are just changing.

With love, Nicole

Acts 1:9-11 "After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky?'"

Following Jesus eventually means doing the work when you can't see him. What would it mean to stop looking for Jesus to return and start being the place where Jesus is present?

John 21:9 "When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread."

Jesus is there. Making breakfast.
Not ascending in clouds of glory. Not delivering a theological treatise. Grilling fish. Over a charcoal fire.
