Jesus had loving, serious, and truthful words for the man he healed at the pool of Bethesda. Upon meeting him shortly afterward, Jesus said, “Don’t sin any more…” (John 5:14b NET).
Literally, He is saying, “Stop doing what you are doing!” “Stop it!” This command may sound absurd if not impossible to any person serious about living a life of holiness in our “fallen” world, especially those who feel trapped in habitual sin, or who claim the identity of “sinner.” But Jesus reveals Himself as the all-powerful Son of God; by His sovereign will having authority over creation, life, and death! This healed man’s new behavior (“walking”) testified of his encounter with Jesus; he also had no reason to doubt Jesus’ capability to provide the means to carry out this new command, “stop sinning!”
Philippians 4:13 NET exclaims, “I am able to do all things through the One who strengthens me.” By faith, through the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are empowered to follow Jesus’ command throughout each day! Let’s embrace our new identity as “saints” – literally: “holy, consecrated, and set apart for God!”

Among the “watchwords” expressed today by our military and leaders is, “Freedom is not Free!” It carries a sobering reminder that a great cost of human lives has been paid for the privileges and freedom we enjoy and often take for granted. By sincerely remembering those unforgettable sacrifices, we honor them as well. Memorial Day is our Nation’s effort to evoke our deepest appreciation for all who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

In His parable of the 4 Soils (Mt 13:1-9,18-23) Jesus made the point that the fruitfulness of the crop depended on the fertility of the soil. Any good gardener can verify this. In other words the spiritual fruitfulness of our life will depend on the condition of our heart to receive God’s word and respond to it.
But what is it that makes and keeps our hearts fertile soil for transformation and growth through God’s word? In a word it is our love for Him. Our love for Jesus must exceed and be a priority over our love for anyone else, even those closest to us, and over anything else that might become a priority (or idol) in our life.
Spiritual drift happens when we allow the drift of the world or our sinful flesh to carry us downstream away from Christ. But when we keep our hearts connected to Christ, fueling the fire of our love for Him through His word and worship, we swim against the stream and into a powerful fruitful growth in Him.

It seems that few of us have the unique quality of getting along well with everyone. It involves a keen outlook manifested as positive determination; intent on making a difficult person’s day a little better, at least. Simply tolerating others does not qualify!
Difficult people are everywhere! Yes, even in the Church…our “spiritual family!” Pop! There goes our “unity bubble;” expectations of those perfect forms of worship, relationship models, understanding, acts of service, and so on, among our fellow Christians! Instead of embracing erroneous expectations we must live up to for acceptance, Paul tells us how to make our lives and church environment an exceptionally positive experience!

“Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand.” Philippians 4:5 ESV (other translations use “gentleness” and “forbearance”)
Failure to display reasonableness is tied to our sense of independence; handling issues, concerns, threats, etc., in our own strength. Distraction is inevitable when we allow demands for reasonableness to become laced with the “what ifs” of our fear-based “contingency plans,” or the mindset: “What will others think if I fail?” Impatience is similar especially when we attempt to “force things into our agenda or time-schedule” to accommodate our idea of success!
Note Paul’s encouraging exhortation: First and foremost, he bases the choice to be “reasonable” upon the presence of Christ! Let’s remember that Jesus was always “reasonable” and at perfect rest; never distracted, impulsive, or in a hurry! His entire focus resulted from trust and devotion to His Father! John 5:19, 30 NET!

Just like everything else God does for His Church, it is always “…far beyond all that we ask or think” (Eph. 3:20 NET) and always undeserved; the cross of Christ is our continual reminder that Father values us beyond measure! Consider a few thoughts about these “lavished blessings” in Christ: Father chose us in Christ. He forgave us. He guaranteed our future inheritance. He gave us gifts for the purpose of sharing His love!
Okay, you might exclaim, “This all sounds wonderful, but what does it mean for me, right now in my circumstances!?” To answer with another question, “Noting that God’s focus is upon building His Church, how are you connected with other believers?” These relationships are designed for us to experience God’s grace intended to lavish us via reciprocal interaction with others having similar needs; conforming us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:28-29). Our experiences are meant to be shared with the fellowship of God’s “saints!” That is where we find other imperfect people, like us, seeking the Lord; facing “trials,” feeling overwhelmed, in need of encouragement, help, blessing, inspiration, as well as the opportunity to “be heard.”

How does God plan for prosperity to show up in our lives today? There are many appropriate answers, here is one of them: Have you ever considered how “good works” may reflect “prosperity?” That is what the Apostle Paul tells us! “For we are His creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them”. (Ephesians 2:10 NET) Note the following from the NET Bible commentary: “Before the devil began to control our walk in sin and among sinful people, God had already planned good works for us to do.”
Regardless of our daily circumstances, this reminder from Ephesians 2:10 is a breath of spiritual fresh air; reminding us of the privilege of serving others for the glory of God (cf. John 15:5; Philippians 4:13; Colossians 1:27)! YES, God has “good works for us to do” TODAY!

There are numerous “isms” catalogued by our “world system” but among them, one especially seems more widely promoted even among many Christians. I am referring to “individualism.” Examples range from sports to politics to secular academia. Its flawed emphasis distorts personal “rights,” embraces entitlement, and destroys unity at the expense of moral responsibility and respect for authority. It ignores failure by applauding pride and effort over results. Remember Frank Sinatra's hit song? “I Did It My Way!”
In contrast, Biblical teaching emphasizes the “whole” while recognizing the intrinsic value of individual “parts” purposed to function together under God’s authority. We are members one of another as part of the Body of Christ!
