I hear from progressive Christians all the time who tell me they cannot find a congregation where they fit in and feel comfortable. As one reader said, “I believe we are created to be in relationship, and my spirit desires a progressive worshipping community, but I haven’t found one yet.” I’...

🙏🏾 Holy One:

We pray today for our faith communities.

You have placed us into real places with real needs.

Help us to be mindful of the needs around us and to respond to those needs with love, justice, compassion - and real actions.

May we partner with those working for the common good.

Open our eyes and our hands to make an impact with our neighbors.

Amen.

In Isaiah 58, God speaks in a voice showing impatience for wanton behavior:

1 Announce to my people their crime,
They seek me day after day,
desiring knowledge of my ways
like a nation that acted righteously,
that didn’t abandon their God.
2 They ask me for righteous judgments,
wanting to be close to God.
3 Yet on your fast day you do whatever you want, and oppress all your workers.
4 You quarrel and brawl, and then you fast;
you hit each other violently with your fists. …
Then:
6 This the fast I choose:
releasing wicked restraints, untying the ropes of a yoke,
setting free the mistreated, and breaking every yoke;
7 sharing your bread with the hungry
and bringing the homeless poor into your house,
covering the naked when you see them,
and not hiding from your own family.

Yesterday I participated in a protest march with thousands of others in Cleveland demanding that federal agents respect the laws of the land, and to be held accountable for their treacherous actions. I was there because we are experiencing the very behaviors to which the prophet Isaiah bore witness, and from which the prophet warned them to turn, lest we incur the same destructive ends.

📣 The United Church of Christ & Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) leadership released a joint statement on the Venezuela takeover by the United States:

[excerpt] As members of the World Council of Churches, we affirm and support the WCC’s statement condemning the actions of the United States. We join the global ecumenical community in calling for restraint, respect for sovereignty, and renewed commitment to peaceful, multilateral engagement.

We recall Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” His teachings compel us to work tirelessly for peace, justice, and reconciliation.

We offer our prayers for all communities impacted by the recent unilateral and unlawful decisions of the United States to attack sovereign nations. As churches committed to the gospel of peace, we grieve the loss, fear, and instability these actions have caused globally. These actions do not create the conditions for a safer or more peaceful world.
