1. JESUS PRAYS
V
“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Matthew 26:38
Matthew 26:36-46

Jesus is compelled to desperate prayer.
Think of Jesus’ complete honesty in prayer.
Jesus calls together his friends in his most desperate time of prayer.
What drives you to such a desperate time of prayer?

2. JESUS IS BETRAYED
V
“Friend, do what you came here to do.” Matthew 26:50
“The son of man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. 
They will kill him and after three days he will rise.” Mark 9:31
Matthew 26:14-16

The son of God was betrayed by a friend. The son of God was betrayed by his creation.

3. JESUS IS JUDGED
V
The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Mark 14:55, 56

M
The religious authority of the day judged Jesus. He was the long awaited hope for the Jewish people but wasn’t believed to be by the very people who were waiting for him.

Jesus sees you for who you are not for how others perceive you.

4. JESUS IS DENIED

 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. Luke 22:60-62

Have you felt betrayed? Abandoned? 
One of Jesus’ most loyal friends betrayed him. 3 times in fact. He knows what it feels like to be betrayed by the ones he loved.
He can see you when everyone else has left you. Jesus knows the feeling of being abandoned by his friends.

5. JESUS IS CONDEMNED

What brings on our mockery?
These soldiers brutalize Jesus. Possibly their common response to Jewish prisoners. Imagine the Son of God being brutalized by men.

6. JESUS IS MOCKED & BEATEN

7. JESUS IS GIVEN HIS CROSS

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” John 3:14-15

The cross was a public murder device for criminals. This is how Jesus was killed.
Imagine carrying the wood of the cross... up the hill to your eventual slow and public death.

Jesus chose his cross, God came down to take this cross and bring you home.

8. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

“When you have lifted up the Son of Man then you will know that I am the one i claim to be....” John 8:28
“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all mankind to myself.” John 12:32
“My God My God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46

The long physical pain of crucifixion was excruciating. In fact, the word excruciating is derived from crucifixion.

Excruciating was a choice by Jesus to take our sin and shame.

9. MARY & JOHN WATCH JESUS DIE

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. John 19:26-27

As Mary and John trembled and cried at the foot of the cross, Jesus united them as mother and son. Even in the midst of his suffering, Jesus empathizes with how they feel abandoned by God and offers comfort. 

Jesus empathizes with you in your loneliness.

10. JESUS DIES
V
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13 “It is finished.” John 19:30
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Luke 23:46

Jesus died. He died. Our greatest fear is death. And He was not insulated from that fear. His physical body stopped working.
His friends watched Him die.
