First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, Virginia

First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, Virginia First Baptist is a congregation of free and faithful Baptist Christians living out what it means to be followers of Jesus in our community.

First Baptist Church is unique among Baptist churches in Lynchburg. Although it was a longtime member of the Southern Baptist Convention, FBC left the convention in 2000 because we affirm the ordination of women. FBC is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Baptist General Association of Virginia, and the Lynchburg Baptist Association.

Isaiah 6:1-8 is one of the most striking and mysterious passages in all of the Bible. In it, the prophet details a vision that he has of "The Lord, high and lifted up," replete with fantastical looking angelic beings, the sound of singing, a voice that shakes the foundations and a thick smoke which fills the Temple. The prophet has an unforgettable experience of worshiping God face-to-face. This Sunday's sermon (June 6) will unpack some of the elements of worship that can be discerned from the passage and has the title "Why We Are Here." Consider this YOUR invitation to come to Lynchburg's First Baptist Church to experience "Classic Worship in a Historic Setting" this Sunday, beginning at 11:00 AM. Hope to see you there!

The Sunday after Easter is known in many church circles as "Low Sunday." Nobody really knows why, though I suspect it has to do with attendance compared to the week before. This Sunday we'll be looking at 1 John 5:1-6, a sermon with the title "The World Is Too Much with Us" with a nod to poet William Wordsworth. One of the questions we will be considering is "Which is it hardest to do--to love God, to love his children or to follow his commandments?" Come this Sunday as we wrestle with the scriptures once more to see what God would say to us. It all happens at 11:00 at Lynchburg's historic First Baptist Church!

(What's Easter Sunday without the chance to sing "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today," right?) So make your plans to put on your Easter bonnet and come to Lynchburg's historic First Baptist Church this Easter. Worship begins at 11:00 am. Hope to see YOU there!

No news to report concerning the decision to not meet for weekly in-person worship. The church leadership is closely monitoring the situation and, as more folks get the vaccine and if cases begin to trend downward, perhaps we will be able to reopen next month. In the meantime, our pastor is continuing to create new sermons each week. Printed copies (either digital or paper) are available each week from the church office. If you would like to be added to the list to receive the weekly sermon, simply contact the church office and we will be glad to add you to the list.

ANNOUNCEMENT--Due to the ongoing surge in positive tests and deaths due to COVID in Virginia, the decision has been made to SUSPEND all Sunday activities at First Baptist until further notice. It was a difficult decision to make especially at this time of the year, but the church leadership felt like this was best given the situation in which we find ourselves. As the vaccines are becoming available, hopefully it won't be too long before we can meet together again. Until then, be safe, wear your masks when you have to go out, and wash your hands. God bless and have a very Merry Christmas from your friends at First Baptist!

"The heat is on"...so we're back in business once more! This upcoming Sunday, November 8, we will be looking at Joshua's farewell address to the people of Israel as recorded in Joshua 24:1-3a, 15-24. Interestingly, the passage includes a rather testy exchange between Joshua and the people. The title of the sermon is "He Leadeth Me--O Blessed Thought?" and yes, the question mark is intentional. Wear your face mask, practice good social distancing and come worship with us this Sunday. It all begins at 11:00 AM this Sunday at Lynchburg's historic First Baptist Church.
