Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace; to whom be dominion and glory, now and forever. Amen. BCP

On Wednesday at 7pm we are launching the next book club at Restoration Hill. The book is The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism. The title is somewhat confusing as the book was written in 1947.

In short the fundamentalist movement rose to prominence as a counter to the social gospel which was birthed from a hyper-realized Postmillennial eschatology that envisioned a Christian utopia. Unfortunately, in pursuit of their societal goals they embraced modernism and rejected some fundamentals of the Christian faith. It became a social movement divorced from key Christian doctrines.

In response the pendulum swung in the other direction and gave rise to the fundamentalist movement. While the fundamentalists admirably held to the fundamental doctrines of the faith, in reaction to the social gospel they rejected the notion that the church could or should seek to engage social issues. In doing so they reduced Christianity to an individualistic religion concerned exclusively with saving souls and personal (not societal) sin. Along with their embrace of an eschatological belief that "it's all going to burn" the result was a Christianity that abandoned the world and focused exclusively on the souls of individuals.

Henry wrote The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism to chart a third way that became known as neo-Evangelicalism with Carl F. H. Henry as a primary leader of the movement and Billy Graham as the most well known adherent. Henry advocated for holding to the fundamentals of the faith while engaging the world from an in-breaking kingdom of God perspective.

This book had a significant impact on Evangelicalism. We would love to have you join us on Wednesday evening to discuss these important topics that are as relevant today as they were when Henry wrote about them.

Discipleship is not an individualistic exercise. If you are not actively being discipled as part of a community gathered around the ordinances, prayer, the public reading of Scripture, and authoritative preaching by an appointed Elder, then you are missing the mark. In other words, faithful New Testament discipleship is necessarily grounded in the local church.

There are bad and abusive local churches and they should be avoided. But that they exist does not justify the negation of the clear teaching of the New Testament. Individualistic Christianity divorced from the local church is not found in Scripture.

That said, people have been hurt by churches. They need compassion and time to heal. They should be afforded all that they need, but we should not neglect forever the necessity of gathering as a committed participant in a local body of believers.

Join us at 7pm on Wednesday, September 3rd as we kick off our next book club discussion group. The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalism is a classic. The premise is to reject the isolationism of the church and discover a robust Evangelical theology for engaging the world according to the kingdom of God. We hope you will join us! If you want to participate but cannot afford the book let us know and we will provide a copy.

There is no greater drama in human record than the sight of a few Christians, scorned or oppressed by a succession of emperors, bearing all trials with fierce tenacity, multiplying quietly, building order while their enemies generated chaos, fighting the sword with the word, brutality with hope, and at last defeating the strongest state that history has known. Caesar and Christ had met in the arena, and Christ had won. ~ Will Durant in The Story of Civilization

The in-breaking kingdom of God overcomes the empires of the world, not by becoming like them, but by faithfully embracing the cross shaped life of Jesus. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 1 Peter 2:23 ESV

You demonstrate to the world that you love Jesus and are submitted to Him by the way you treat other people.

One of the biggest problems with our discipleship efforts is we have made spiritual disciplines the standard to measure our faithfulness. While these are important for growth, the Bible is clear that the gauge of our faithfulness is how we love and treat others, even our enemies.
