Lutz Cemetery has been a place of rest and remembrance for over 100-years.

Now proudly operated by members of The American Legion Post 108, the cemetery continues its legacy as a non-profit, community-serving cemetery.

Planning ahead can feel confusing—especially when you’re not sure which decisions belong to a funeral home and which belong to a cemetery.

The simplest way to think about it is this:

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲. They help families with arrangements such as preparing and caring for the deceased, transportation, cremation when selected, funeral or memorial arrangements, and other services that take place before arrival at the cemetery.

That may include traditional burial, cremation inurnment, columbarium placement, opening and closing services, memorialization, and the long-term care of the cemetery grounds.

These are two different providers with two different roles, and understanding the difference can make pre-planning much easier.
You also have choices. Selecting a funeral home does not mean you must use a cemetery affiliated with that provider. Your final resting place is a separate and deeply personal decision.

For some families, planning ahead means more than choosing a final resting place. It means 𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒—somewhere generations can remain together and loved ones can return to remember.

Historic Lutz Cemetery offers two Family Estate options:

𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 — $13,000 𝐼𝑛𝑐𝑙𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒. The estate also includes all additional cremation inurnment rights for the four sites—𝐚 $𝟔,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 compared with purchasing those rights separately. This provides families with flexibility for both traditional burial and cremation while preserving a shared family location.

🌧️𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

At Historic Lutz Cemetery, sometimes one heavy rain is all it takes to partially—or even completely—cover some of our flat grave markers with soil and sand.

Grounds Manager Nate Southwick has been diligently locating and uncovering these stones. Unfortunately, in some areas, the next rain can undo that work. We want to do more than keep uncovering the same stones. We want to solve the problem.

HLC is currently developing a topography map of the cemetery to identify areas most affected by water flow, erosion, and soil accumulation. This will help us better understand why certain markers repeatedly become covered and determine possible long-term solutions.

Our team also recently met with Jermaine from The Headstone Place, who is helping us research options and costs for professionally raising affected markers.

Because raising these stones is corrective work beyond the routine grounds maintenance covered by our Perpetual Care budget, we are developing a new community preservation initiative:

𝐀𝐃𝐎𝐏𝐓 𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐄 — 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐧

The program will give individuals, families, businesses, and community organizations an opportunity to help fund the professional raising of affected grave markers.

For now, Nate will keep digging, our team will keep mapping, and we’ll keep working toward a lasting solution.
Because every stone marks a life. And every life deserves to be remembered.

A Young Volunteer. A Meaningful Project. A Lasting Contribution. 🇺🇸

Sometimes community service begins with something very simple: someone asking, “How can I help?”

Recently, young volunteer Mason Kline reached out to Historic Lutz Cemetery looking for an opportunity to volunteer and make a difference.

Mason visited the cemetery and met with Operations Manager Lisa Sargent and Grounds Manager Nate Southwick to learn more about the cemetery and some of the projects currently underway. It wasn't long before Nate found just the right project for him.

Historic Lutz Cemetery had received two large concrete American flags intended to become section markers for our Post 108 Honor Eternal Section. The flags arrived as plain concrete and needed someone willing to carefully bring them to life.

Mason accepted the challenge.

Legacy Story | Lester “Boddie” & Dorry Osteen

For years, those traveling Highway 41 through Lutz may have seen Lester “Boddie” Osteen standing roadside on Veterans Day, proudly waving an American flag.

He did it to remind people of the veterans who didn’t make it home.

A U.S. Marine who served in Korea, Boddie returned to Lutz, married his childhood sweetheart, Dorry, and together they raised five children in the home they built just across Highway 41 from Historic Lutz Cemetery.
On Veterans Day 2025, Boddie and Dorry were laid to rest together at Historic Lutz Cemetery—a fitting homecoming for two lives deeply rooted in Lutz.

Boddie stood there so we wouldn’t forget. Neither should we.
