Only Jesus - 5 Day Devotional

Day 3: Jesus Plus Nothing
Reading: Galatians 1:6-10; Ephesians 2:8-9

The most dangerous lie in Christianity is subtle: Jesus plus something else. Plus good works. Plus religious heritage. Plus perfect behavior. Paul's warning to the Galatians rings urgent: any gospel that adds to Christ's finished work is no gospel at all. Salvation is Christ alone—His righteousness credited to us through faith. We cannot earn it, improve it, or lose it through our performance. This isn't permission for careless living; it's freedom from performance-based religion. Examine your heart today: Are you trusting Jesus plus your church attendance? Plus your moral superiority? Plus your family background? Confess any additions you've made to the gospel. Rest completely in Christ's finished work. Your salvation depends entirely on Him, not you.

Only Jesus - 5 Day Devotional

Day 2: The Safety of Scripture
Reading: 2 Peter 1:12-15; Psalm 119:105

Peter understood something profound: repetition isn't redundancy when it comes to God's Word. Like Paul, he saw value in reminding believers of truth they already knew. Scripture isn't just information to acquire once; it's living bread we need daily. The enemy wants us to think we've "heard it all before," robbing God's Word of its power in our lives. But each reading, each reminder, builds a safeguard around our hearts. Today, revisit a familiar passage—perhaps John 3:16 or Psalm 23. Don't rush through it. Let the Holy Spirit reveal fresh truth. Ask yourself: What am I remembering today that protects my faith? God's Word never grows old; we simply need fresh eyes.

The gospel didn't come to us just to stop with us—it came to us so it could go through us to others. This powerful truth from 2 Timothy 2:1-2 challenges us to move beyond being consumers of faith to becoming disciple-makers who multiply God's kingdom.

Paul's final letter reminds us that healthy disciples make disciples. Before we can strengthen others, we must first be strengthened by the grace found in Christ Jesus. It's not about our talent, determination, or effort—it's about depending fully on Him. The question isn't just "Am I learning God's truth?" but "Who am I passing it on to?"

At Southside, we're called to be multiplication-focused—developing disciples who make disciples. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, connect group leader, or believer, someone is waiting for you to invest in their spiritual journey. The gospel reached you because someone faithfully shared it. Now it's your turn to pass it forward.

Who is helping you follow Jesus? And who are you helping take their next step toward Him?

Only Jesus - 5 Day Devotional

Day 1: Joy in the Midst of Trials
Reading: Philippians 3:1; James 1:2-4

Paul wrote about rejoicing while imprisoned—not from comfort, but from conviction. His joy wasn't circumstantial; it was rooted in Christ. When we face difficulties, our natural response is complaint, yet Paul demonstrates supernatural joy. This isn't denying pain but recognizing Christ's presence transcends our circumstances. Consider what Paul lost: freedom, comfort, safety. Yet he commanded believers to rejoice. Today, identify one difficult circumstance in your life. Instead of focusing on what you've lost, ask God to reveal what knowing Christ means in that moment. True joy isn't found in perfect circumstances but in the perfect Savior who walks with us through every trial.

What if everything you're counting on for salvation isn't enough? This Sunday, we explored Philippians 3 and discovered Paul's radical message: it's not Jesus PLUS anything—it's Jesus ALONE.

Paul had every reason to boast—the right heritage, perfect religious credentials, blameless under the law. Yet he called it all garbage compared to knowing Christ. He wrote about joy and righteousness while sitting in a prison cell, reminding us that true freedom isn't found in our performance, but in Christ's finished work.

Are you trusting in your good deeds, your family background, or your religious activities? Romans 10:13 promises that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Not everyone who tries hard enough. Not everyone who's good enough. Everyone who calls.

You're no closer to being worthy of Christ's blood today than the day you first cried out for it. And you're never too far for His blood to reach you. That's the beauty of grace.
