Player pianos are basically regular pianos with a giant motor in the way 😅 This was my first time tuning one, thank you to my dear friend for trusting me with her baby and for allowing me to post some photos 🎹🖤

The Chase-Hackley Piano company moved to Muskegon in 1890 from Grand Rapids and was well known for their quality pianos. This one is in great shape, especially considering its age and how much use it had in her prime.

During my recent trip to Italy, I had the opportunity to tour the palace of the Borromean Islands. This palace was briefly occupied by Napoleon and is designed in the Baroque style.

The music room has a harpsichord made of golden cypress wood. While they look very similar, piano players will notice right away the smaller size of the harpsichord. The other main difference is that this instrument plucks the strings, while pianos have a hammer that strikes the strings.

This beautiful piano needed a tuning after its move to Ludington and also needed a repair to the sustain pedal.

I don’t usually do repairs because I don’t have a workshop or a mentor but I couldn’t find another tech to help and wanted the church to be able to count on full use of their piano for the holiday season 🎹🌟

I went back to my certification books, studied diagrams of the action of the piano, and removed the action to compare how this piano worked and what might be missing.

🤓 I figured out what the new part needed to look like to make the pedal work again without ever seeing the original part. Thank you, Radiant Church, for trusting me to do this repair!

You probably have been told not to put your piano on an outside wall of the house.

This is good advice! But not the only thing to keep in mind when deciding where to have your piano in your home.

Other things to consider:
🎹 Keep away from heating/cooling vents
🎹 Do not let it get direct sunlight
🎹 Be aware of humidity levels
🎹 How “hard” the piano is played

Sometimes the living space/house set up doesn’t allow for many options, and that’s ok too! But it will mean I should visit more often 😁
