CONTENDING
"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints." Jude 3
The Barkley Marathons endurance race is held in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee. It is said to be the ultimate example of a long distance race. Runners try year after year, often failing repeatedly until a select few finally achieve a finish.
The idea for this race was created by Gary Cantrell, an endurance runner himself.
The race requires runners to complete five grueling off trail loops totaling roughly 130 miles, with over 65,000 feet of elevation gain within 60 hours. GPS is forbidden, and the course changes slightly each year, making the race even more difficult. Racers must collect pages from hidden books along the way to prove their route. Some years end with zero finishers. Endurance racers return time and again, suffering multiple failures and grueling setbacks until they secure their finish and join an elite group of race finishers.
This story sounds a lot like what Jude wrote about concerning contending for the faith, doesn't it?
We ask for and accept salvation freely, then run the race of the redeemed just as Paul spoke of:
"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
There are all kinds of stumbling blocks along this race we run as Christians, but by prayer, unyielding faith, and God given resilience, the strong keep getting up, keep fighting, and keep moving forward until their race is finished.
My friend, the race is worth the hurt. The race is worth the struggle. For at the end of our race, we shall hear the Lord say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

THE MESSENGER
“And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, what the LORD saith unto me, that will I speak.” 1 Kings 22:14
The prophet Micaiah was a holdout among the bought out so called prophets of his day, a God man, not a “yes man” for the king.
Our story takes place in the days of Ahab, king of Israel's northern kingdom. Ahab is set on breaking three years of peace with Syria, but he wants the help and riches of his neighbor to the south, Jehoshaphat king of Judah. But Jehoshaphat has a request. He wants Ahab to inquire of the LORD before he goes into battle.
So Ahab gathers his bought out “prophets” together, and they say, “Go up, for God will deliver it into thy hand.” But Jehoshaphat, being a just man, feels something is not quite right, so he asks Ahab, “Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might inquire of him?”
Micaiah was this man, but Ahab never took heed to Micaiah's words because Ahab said, “He never prophesieth good unto me.”
My friend, are we living in a time such as it was in Micaiah's day?
Have we found ourselves in a day when men do not want to hear the Message of the Cross anymore? Would men rather be filled with empty assurances of prosperity, turning away from the Truth and condemning the true messenger to sit in chains of idleness? Has the church become just a sea of people listening to yes men and paycheck seekers whose empty name it and claim it performances are wrapped in a form of godliness, yet void of the Holy Ghost?
Micaiah prophesied that Israel would be scattered in battle and that the false message of Ahab's prophets was propagated by lying spirits, and for that Micaiah was beaten and thrown into prison.
My friend, could it be that we could see the same kind of treatment of God's true messengers in these United States in the not so distant future? The old hellfire and brimstone sermons from the revivals of yesterday seem to be getting replaced by sermons with empty promises and blanket healings.
Not unlike Ahab, the modern “church” gets quiet when hearing the Message of Truth, choosing instead to regard performance and cookie cutter sermons.
Woe unto the so called “messenger” if he preaches a blanket message of prosperity that is void of what Jesus went through at Calvary, and the fact that a man or woman must be washed in the Blood of Jesus if they are to inherit eternal life!

PSALM 140
“Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man; preserve me from the violent man, which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips.
Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man, who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me.
I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.
O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; further not his wicked device, lest they exalt themselves.
As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
Let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire, into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
I know that the Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto Thy name; the upright shall dwell in Thy presence.”
Psalm 140
The Psalms, for the most part, are short and make great morning reading for those with a busy life. As you read, you will find situations and circumstances much like those we have today.
In this particular Psalm, we discover right away that it is a Psalm of David asking God to deliver him, preserve him, keep him, hear him, and grant not the desires of those that come against him. David identifies himself as the afflicted, the poor, the righteous, and the upright.
Were his descriptions of himself an act of vanity? No.
Were his self describing words spoken for pity? No.
All David was doing was describing the condition of his heart, mind, body, and soul.
David also identifies his assailants: the evil man, the violent man, the proud, the wicked, and the evil speaker. What you should notice is the specificity of David's prayer. In this Psalm, the one being pursued was addressed, the aggressor was addressed, and what was needed from the only One who could help was addressed, and that is God.
In this hour, many times men pray very generically. You may ask, “Why pray specifically when God already knows our problems?”
The truth is, I cannot give you an explanation for why that is, but I can tell you that when I have prayed in detail, I have seen many of those prayers answered to the letter. And I think I will follow David's lead in prayer and rest on the evidence of what I have already witnessed happening in my own prayer life.
Read a Psalm a day. It will not hurt you. There are 150 of them, and if you break down Psalm 119 into sections, that will give you 22 more. Each section contains 8 verses, and you will learn the Hebrew alphabet as well.
Let's see. If we do that, that is 172 mornings, almost six months' worth. I wonder what we could learn of God from men with problems and victories just like you and me if we would just take a few extra minutes each day to read the Book of Psalms?

THOSE THINGS MISSED
“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.” Psalm 42:1
The lost man, in his void state of grace, is blinded to the purpose of life, but when the scales of sin fall from blinded eyes, the answers are all around him!
When empty of Christ, we pursue vain glory, but when filled by mercy, we desire that eternal weight of glory! Just as the man in his fleshly state lives to eat, the spiritual man eats to live! The things of God we miss are only realized when conviction takes hold and we accept Jesus as our Savior. It is only then that we see what we've missed and desire it even more, like the thirsting deer desires the cool, clear water of the flowing stream.
I came across an example of a person who had missed the answers of life until they had found Jesus. These are their words:
“Too late did I love Thee, O Fairness, so ancient, and yet so new! Too late did I love Thee! For behold, Thou wert within, and I without, and there did I seek Thee; I, unlovely, rushed heedlessly among the things of beauty Thou madest. Thou wert with me, but I was not with Thee. Those things kept me far from Thee, which, unless they were in Thee, were not. Thou calledst, and criedst aloud, and forcedst open my deafness. Thou didst gleam and shine, and chase away my blindness. Thou didst exhale odours, and I drew in my breath and do pant after Thee. I tasted, and do hunger and thirst. Thou didst touch me, and I burned for Thy peace.”
Though those words were written long ago and not as we speak today, they carry the unmistakable tone of a person changed by grace, remorseful that they had not seen it before, yet now thankful that they do.
Let us not grieve over what we had not seen before, but rejoice in that which we now see before us. Paul said it like this in Philippians 3:
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Yes, we may have missed God in the past and not known the answers to many things, but if you now know Him, wait with patience for the glory that is yet to be known!

DISAPPOINTING GOD
"How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert! He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:" Psalm 78:40, 55-56
Is it possible for mankind to disappoint God? I guess the first thing we need to ask is, can God be disappointed?
Our text gives evidence of God's disappointment in Israel after the Exodus. Also, in John 10:30, Jesus tells us that He and the Father are one. Then Isaiah wrote in Chapter 53 of Christ's ability to feel sorrow, pain, and grief. The two being as one yields evidence that both feel all those emotions, including disappointment.
Do you feel disappointment? If you feel it, then God feels it, because Genesis 2:7 says, "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Created in His image includes our feelings, because our image would be lifeless without emotions. The emotions of God were given to us when He breathed upon us and we became a living soul.
All that being said, I feel the answer to our original question is yes. We do often disappoint God. Some who proclaim the name of Christ have fits of rage. Some who proclaim the name of Christ speak vulgarities in those times of anger. Some who proclaim the name of Christ fail to have compassion for the lost and dying of this world. Men say they are saved but only show the evidence within the confines of the four walls of the church. Men covet their neighbors. Men use slang words for curse words, thinking it is okay. Men think wrongly and somehow feel that God does not know. Yes, we disappoint our Father!
Second Corinthians 5:10 says we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. In that holy presence, I feel we will hear the Lamb of God tell us of all the times we disappointed the Father, of all the times we shook our fist, of all the times we spoke in vain, of all the times we could have been a positive witness for the Throne of Grace but chose instead to disappoint God.
Yes, it is a choice, my friend. You choose to drag around and be late for work, and then you are mad at everyone else for being in your way. You choose to fix your mouth to frame a word of disgust that is contrary to the language of a Christian. And the one thing folks choose to do most often that disappoints God is their failure to share the mercy and grace supplied by the blood of His only begotten Son.
How do you feel when your children disappoint you? Think about it. Then know this: before this day is over, if we do not remain conscious of our decisions, we may disappoint the One who loved us enough to give Jesus over to the cruelty of the Cross to deliver us from the fires of hell. And then know this: before this day is over, we may face judgment.
Knowing all these things to be true, how then will you live out the time you have left?

FREEDOM
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh” Galatians 5:13a
I'm thankful for freedom, aren't you? But is it possible that the very thing we're thankful for may be what destroys us as a nation?
If it wasn't for freedom, I probably wouldn't be allowed to share this message each day. If it wasn't for freedom, we probably wouldn't be able to worship the way we do.
On the flip side of that same coin of freedom, an antichrist agenda is promoted and tolerated in the name of freedom. My friends, again, I'm thankful for our freedom, but it's that same freedom that allows blatant evil to advance itself slowly but surely, systematically destroying these United States!
Paul wrote the words of our text telling us that believers are called to liberty. Then he gives a warning: "Only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." He adds that if people misuse this freedom, "take heed that ye be not consumed one of another."
In 1 Peter 2:16, Peter instructs Christians to live as free people, "and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God." Then in 2 Peter 2:19, he tells us that false teachers promise liberty, but "they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bo***ge."
My friends, this country we love has, by this very freedom fought for, separated itself from "In God We Trust," choosing rather to say, "In my rights I can do whatever I want!"
There was a day when no politician would dare campaign for public office without first affiliating themselves with a Bible believing church. Now they could care less. All they worry about is that their platform doesn't offend the radical free will agenda!
My friends, I hate to be the one to tell you, but the church has lost its footing in this country, and it's our fault for allowing freedom to be redefined and abused by hell itself. It all happened when America stopped praying!
I know my Bible pretty well, and I challenge you to show me the United States within its pages. You won't find it. It's not there because it will be destroyed from within by making freedom a "free for all" of sin!
The freedom to commit sin will never be okay with God, so it shouldn't be okay with those who proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It does no good to proclaim Jesus if we're not going to live it out!

Lay Apart
“Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” James 1:21
When we look at this verse, our minds gravitate toward words that are not often used by us, such as superfluity, naughtiness, and engrafted. When this happens, we sometimes miss the whole point the Word of God is trying to get through to us. We tend to do the same thing when sitting in church. The preacher's shirt does not match his tie, or he missed a belt loop. These are all simple things that distract us from what is truly important.
The key phrase in this verse is not so much the words we have already mentioned, but rather, “lay apart.”
This morning, as you have read this verse, I am sure you quickly drew an early conclusion about the phrase "lay apart." Some may think it means to "set aside," but to set aside implies that we may go back and pick up those things at a later date. The intent of "lay apart" means to take it off.
Just like taking off filthy clothes that are not fit to ever be worn again, James tells us to take off the old sinful man and never put those garments stained by the flesh on again. But he does not stop there. James says to receive with meekness the engrafted Word of God, which can and will deliver you and me from all unrighteousness!
So let us lay apart the old man and walk on with Jesus!
None of us are perfect. None! But we should, with patience and perseverance, strive to be the people God designed us to be.

FORGOTTEN
“My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me.” Job 19:14
Our text today comes from a story many of us are very familiar with. We identify with this man, Job, because of his grief and physical pain, but how much mental anguish did he suffer because he felt he had been forgotten? Wasn't it enough that Job had lost everything? Did he have to feel forgotten as well?
I see it all the time, especially with our elderly, but they aren't the only ones. The signs of people's hurt and pain are all around you. Can't you see them?
Friends and family alike look at a person's difficult circumstances and make light of them because they went through a similar experience and came out okay. Everyone is not like you. Everyone does not handle loneliness, anxiety, and grief the same way. The truth is that your failure to take your family member's or friend's pain seriously could destroy the last bit of hope they have.
It's a terrible thing to feel like you're alone. It's even worse to look around and realize you are alone. The same goes for being rejected and shoved to the back of the line by those closest to you for something or someone they feel is better or more important than you.
My friend, if you have close family in a hard place, you should remain at their side until their storm passes by. If you have a friend in need, it's important to check on them and listen to their troubles. You don't have to know what to say or what to do. Just be there. Your presence will do more than you know.
There are more people than can be numbered in this hour who deal with anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Many of these struggles could be avoided if family and friends would abandon their busy lives for just a little while and be that presence in someone's life who needs it.
I'm not going to close like normal, but I'll close with these words to those who have found themselves in that place of feeling forgotten:
"Remember, Jesus understands (ref. Isaiah 53), and He's a really good listener. I pray He will send someone with compassion to help you through this hard place in life. And may the Holy Ghost overshadow you with His grace and peace until your storm passes by."

THE DERAILED DISCIPLE

“Arise, go to Ninevah”
Jonah 1:2a

This morning I thought of Jonah and how I always felt that he must of been a Just man. If I’m right and Jonah was Just, then why did he run from Gods Will ?, why did he have to have his soul faint within him before he would remember The Lord ?,,, why so reluctant ?!?
As we read Jonah and hear of his flight, his dilemma and of Gods Mercy we begin to feel Jonah’s has now gotten back on track ,,,and then no sooner do we feel that way till we hear God ask Jonah in the last chapter “Doest thou well to be angry ?”.
My friend the examples of the reluctant and derailed are peppered throughout Gods Word. Even those we feel to be Just can get caught up, distracted and derailed by things that are not what we call immoral, but just as devastating spiritually. Jonahs story teaches us that none of us are exempt from being derailed. May God show us the same Mercy as He showed Jonah as we walk through this ol dry barren land.

TESTED AND TRIED

“And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.”
Genesis 22:1

This morning let’s look at Genesis Chapter 22. Our First Verse Says , “God did tempt Abraham”. For those who understand the character of God do you fell it was Gods intention to “Tempt” Abraham ? James 1:13 tells us that God doesn’t tempt men,so why use “Tempt” in This Verse. The word “Tempt” possesses the inclination that it causes a person to choose one thing or another, to choose presents a trial , a test, the word causes the reader to ask if Abraham will be faithful or go his own way, hence a temptation. When This Verse was translated from Hebrew the word used was “Nacah” meaning "to test," "to try," or "to prove". So in a sense what God told Abraham to do could have been seen by Abraham as a temptation, because the flesh always try’s to discern our trials and give its advice in the direction our flesh feels we should go.

No, God did not tempt Abraham and neither did Abraham allow the flesh to make it a temptation. In Verse Two God gives Abraham direction to take his son Issac , go into the land of Moriah and offer him as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains that God would tell Abraham of. Then in Verse Three without hesitation or question Abraham arose the next morning and done as he was told.

Does God still give direction to people in this hour ? Sure He does. Is Gods direction a temptation? Gods intentions are never to temp mankind, it only becomes a temptation when self gets in the way and we allow the devil to whisper in our ear like he done to Eve in the garden, “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”

My friend don’t allow the devil or the flesh to turn Gods direction into temptation. Because Gods intentions are not to tempt us but to try us, prove us, and by those make us stronger.
“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
