Honduras Mission Trip- Altamesa Edition: Day 6
Kaison and Nolan started our morning out strong with a reminder of the relationship faith and works should have.
We had the honor of worshipping with the congregation here in Gualaco. In fact, we didn’t have to travel far because the property where we are housed and fed is part of the church’s property!
It was an incredible worship experience. They sing with reckless abandon. There are no pitch pipes or 4 party harmonies, yet sharing in worship was still harmonious. Tye brought us the Word and Mayra translated for him. He did a fantastic job! During the service a family introduced their new baby and Pablo, the local preacher, prayed a blessing over him and the family. After the service was over everyone was eager to meet us and shake hands. Again, a common language wasn’t needed to understand we were welcomed and loved there.
Rewinding back to yesterday, our final concrete floor was for a woman, Maritza, who doesn’t go to church. She was shocked that she received a floor because it’s not uncommon in her community for the church to help just the church members. Hearing that was hard to swallow. I could go on and on about how Jesus didn’t specify that we only help hungry church members, or clothes naked church members, etc., instead He said when we did this for the least of these, regardless of their church membership, we did it for Him. Norman, our translator told us that Pablo doesn’t discriminate in this way, which provided peace! Anyway, Maritza was invited to church by Mayra, and she showed up! She walked for over an hour to come, and people, let me tell you, today was a scorcher! She stayed and had lunch for us and then we drove her home, but not before picking up some essentials for her baby and family.
While a couple of us were taking Maritza home, the rest of the group went to the city square and played some futbol. We drew a bit of a crowd, and no doubt we left them unimpressed with our footwork.
After that it was time to head to Esperanza Viva, a girls’ home associated with Living Hope for Honduras (the ministry we’ve partnered with this week).
We. Had. A. BLAST!
It was a bit awkward at first as our two groups came together. Of course there was the language barrier, but there was also a bit of a social barrier as well. After about 5 minutes though, you’d never know our two groups were strangers before today. We played. We laughed. And as corny as it sounds, we loved.
It was a delayed goodbye as neither group was quite ready for our time together to end.
We ended the night as usual with some quiet time and then a debrief of the day. A lot of fun moments and deep thoughts were shared as we worked to process our day, and in some cases, our time, here in Gualaco.
