GOOD FRIDAY

Good Friday takes away the need for us to pretend we are better than we are. The Dutch word “Schijnheilig,” first used in 1557, that translates to "hypocritical" or "sanctimonious" and it literally means “fake holy.” Jesus gave himself for us when we were at our very worst! He loved (and still loves) us at our worst; that simply IS the gospel-good news! God declares us beloved totally broken. When we decide to pretend to be fake good on our own, we are basically saying, “Jesus, thanks, but NO THANKS; I don’t need your grace, I am pretending to be good enough myself.”

Good Friday is really good,
because of Christ’s willingness
to take our fake holiness and
transform it into humble gratitude
for the love poured out upon us
in our broken state and
thereby setting us free to be
transformed by God’s amazing love.

Sunday Morning Prayer

How shall I repay Your generosity,
O Lover of my soul?
How shall I repay You for all You have done for me and given me?
If I had died a thousand times for Your sake, it would be as nothing...
How shall I thank You, who suffered dishonor, insult, mockery, scourging, and death for our sakes? ...
The only thing I can return to You is my prayers, that time I devote each day to speaking and listening to You.
Receive my prayer as a tiny token of my enormous gratitude.
Amen.
-TYCHON OF ZADONSK (1724-1783)

Saturday

Lord Jesus,
You are my righteousness;
I am Your sin.
You took on You what was mine;
You set on me what was Yours.
You became what You were not that I might become what I was not.
Martin Luther (1483-1546) died at age 63
