Martyrdom of the Great St. Mark, the Apostle & Evangelist of the Land of Egypt
May 8 | Parmoute 30

St. Mark was one of the seventy apostles appointed by our Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 10:10) and one of the four Evangelists. Many believe the Gospel according to St. Mark to be dated shortly before the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.

St. Mark, the evangelist, is the founder of the Coptic Orthodox Church. He visited Alexandria, Egypt in the year 61 AD to preach the Holy Gospel in obedience to the Holy Spirit. St. Mark was the first missionary to Egypt and succeeded in founding the See of Alexandria. He is regarded as the first pope of an unbroken chain of 118 patriarchs.

Therefore the Coptic Orthodox Church can claim the blessing of apostolicity from its inception. An apostle who was specifically chosen by our Lord Jesus Christ founded the Coptic Orthodox Church.

In 68 AD the nobles incited the crowds against St. Mark and they seized him at church and tied a rope around him. He was inhumanely dragged from street to street and then thrown into prison badly beaten and near death.

While in prison the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to him and said, "Be strong, O my Evangelist, for tomorrow you shall receive the Crown of Martyrdom." The next morning the pagans again dragged St. Mark through the streets until his head separated from the rest of his body. This chosen apostle was steadfast and strong until death.

This is our heritage in which our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us with and we thank our Lord for granting us all an example of how we too should remain steadfast despite the obstacles and challenges we all face in our life.

May the blessings of St. Mark, our Coptic leader, be with us all.

Martyrdom of St. George, Prince of the Martyrs
May 1 | Parmoute 23

On this day, of the year 307 A.D., the great among the martyrs St. George, was martyred. He was born in Cappadocia; his father's name was Anastasius, and his mother's name was Theobaste.

"The choruses: of the martyrs: the just and the righteous: bless you O King George;
For are great among them: because of your confession: after seven years’ time: no one remembered Christ.

You proclaimed Christ: boldly and fearlessly: Seventy kings were there: with their defiled idols.

You received sufferings from them: for seven whole years: They tortured you: with great tortures; with these, Christ the King: honored you greatly: more than the martyrs; He called you, “great”, among them.

With His right hand he adorned you: with seven crowns: He lifted you with Him: to His kingdom with glory and honor.

Hail to you, O martyr: Hail to the courageous hero: Hail to the struggle-mantled: my lord King George.

Pray to the Lord on our behalf; O prize-bearer and martyr: George, my lord and prince: that He may forgive us our sins."
