Good morning! Today on the Christian calendar is All Saints Sunday. It a special day for all Christians, no matter if you have been a believer for only hours or a believer for all your life! The writer to the letter to the Hebrew Christians write, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,[ and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of] the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2, NRSV)
This is a day to pause and remember all the special people who have helped you in your faith journey. Maybe it’s your parent/parents, a family member such as a grandparent, sister, brother, or another family member. Is it a friend, a teacher, a Sunday School Teacher, a Pastor, Priest, or a neighbor, a congregation member; even a complete stranger who was there in your time of need showing Christ to you?
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” These are the witnesses who, have run the race, have gone ahead to be the Lord, and also those who continue to journey with us and be an example and an inspiration for us as we remain here in the world.
William Barclay, in “The New Daily Study Bible” explains this passage this way. “We have the thought of the unseen cloud of witnesses; and they are witnesses in a double sense, for they have witnessed their confession to Christ and now they are witnesses of our performance. Christians are like runners in some crowded stadium. As they press on, the crowd looks down, (from the stands); and the crowd looking down are those who have already won the crown.” (Barclay commentary, “The Letter to the Hebrews, page # 202)
Can you see this analogy in your mind’s eye? I can and I do! I have a couple of thoughts, first wave to those special saints and acknowledge them by name before God in praises and thanksgiving!! Second, I realize my mother and father are still watching me! Yikes! LOL.
