Virtues, EXPLAINED!
In being affable, we make ourselves friendly, approachable, and agreeable to those around us, regardless of how they make us feel. “How good and how pleasant it is when brothers dwell together as one,” writes King David in Psalm 133.

Today is the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. Did you know that his birthday is one of only three celebrated by the Church? The others are Jesus Christ and Mary.
St. John the Baptist, pray for us!

LIVE THE LITURGY -
“What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light.” We all hear God’s voice whispering in our hearts. Discipleship means speaking those words out loud. We all feel the Spirit sing into our souls. Discipleship means that we dance to the tune.

The Lowe Down

Whenever I celebrate a funeral Mass, I must confront the reality of who is in the congregation. It is rare that the Mass attendees are practicing Catholics. It is more likely that the congregation has fallen away from weekly (or any) Mass attendance. It is very easy to determine this by a simple test. When I say, “The Lord be with you.”, do I hear crickets (i.e. no response at all), “And also with you” or ”And with your Spirit”.

The lack of response can be unsettling, but we go forward with the Mass. The musicians, altar servers, MC and sacristan are happy to give the proper responses. It’s not a huge problem until we get to communion. That’s when I must pull out “my speech”.

As Catholics, we believe that this is the body of Christ and not just a piece of bread. It that is your belief and you feel worth to receive today, we invite you forward to receive Jesus. If this is not your belief or you don’t feel worthy, perhaps it has been some time since you went to Mass or Confession, we invite you forward with your arms crossed to receive a blessing. Please remember that receiving Jesus in the Eucharist says that you agree with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

And then they start coming forward. There are always obvious “First Communions” who ignore my words. There are others who look unsure. I am frequently confused when a congregation that cannot recite the words of the Our Father can all decide to come up for Communion.

Which brings me to us? Do we agree with the teachings of the church? Do we believe in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist? Should we be receiving the Body of Christ each week?

It’s not my job to judge. That is Jesus’ job. It is my job to inform. I wonder about myself and my worthiness. Do you ever wonder about your worthiness?
