CR Monday: Grateful for Grace

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2: 8-10

Question to self: Am I any closer to understanding grace now than when I first started recovery many years ago? I have heard countless messages on grace, read books about grace, have heard wonderful definitions of grace and yet I don’t fully understand grace. The bible tells me grace is a gift based on our faith not on our works. That can be hard for me to grasp at times. I think we tend to be more focused on what we do but God seems to be more focused on who we are. I have received God’s grace and rejected it, relied on it and taken advantage of it, known the cost that came with it and yet have cheapened it by taking it for granted.

Maybe the reason I don’t understand grace is because I make it about me when it really is all about God. My very limited mind can’t comprehend what I am not supposed to understand, its faith not intellect that draws me into God’s grace. God’s love isn’t dependent on my love for him; we love because God first loved us. I guess I have come to a conclusion that living in grace is much more important than trying to understand grace. “Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.” Thank you God for your grace, it is enough!

“My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (Message Bible)

“And I am sure that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns.” Philippians 1:6

Love God-Love each other!

CR Monday: Let Go, Let God

“My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.” John 10:10

Let go-let God is a familiar saying in recovery circles and its meaning is related to letting go of our selfishness and short comings and letting God take charge of our lives.

How hard it is to live this truth, to put God first in all we do, I think on some level we all fall short. Timothy Keller wrote a great book on the subject called “Counterfeit Gods.” I would encourage you to read it, very powerful insights to the problem of life becoming all about me. Anything we cherish or place above God becomes a substitute for God; money, attitudes, addictions, relationships, career, prestige, even marriage. When we put a person or object or habit above God, we can’t live his purpose for our lives-to live life in all its fullness.

To live life in all its fullness requires putting Jesus first in every area of our lives, easier said than done. We all fall short but when we do we experience no condemnation from God; instead we experience God’s love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. How loving and generous is our God? Look no further than the Cross.

Love God, Love your neighbor!

CR Monday: All Aboard

“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37: 23-24

We come to Celebrate Recovery because our hurts, habits, or hang-up’s have prevented us from moving forward in our lives. We can get stuck, looking for a way out, and despair starts to set in. And then, seemingly right on time, Gods recovery train (Celebrate Recovery) comes to town and we wonder if we can catch it and get on board. Please God, please help me get on this recovery train!

Does God hear you in your time of despair? Yes, he does. He doesn’t care if you are black or white, red or brown, orange or blue. He isn't focused on how much money you make, or how much education you have. He's not concerned about your status or profession. He cares about you, your soul, and what you are going through in this life. Jesus said we are to love God and love people. In good times and bad God never changes, his love for you is complete and unconditional.

So, if your life has derailed and you’re trying to get back on track, listen to Jesus. He is calling out to you-All Aboard! With Jesus you can get on his train anytime, your ticket has been punched and it’s good for a life time.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12

Love God, love people, Jesus first!
