Today's temperatures in the 60s made for a perfect day to collect the Christmas trimmings from the Fenley and Churchman Cemeteries. Due to the high winds the week before, we found an abundance of trimmings on the ground instead of on the headstones.

The Friends Of Henry Avenue Cemetery aka Churchman Cemetery partnered with the Little Loomhouse to do our Christmas Trimmings at Fenley and Churchman Cemeteries a little different this year. The Loomhouse donated the supplies and some of our volunteers handcrafted folk art wreaths. A special thank you to our volunteer Annie Goss Mattingly who handcrafted the most wreaths this year. Today was the perfect morning to check back, on the progress of our tombstone cleaning project we started at Churchman Cemetery a couple of weeks ago. Wow! Our D2 Biological Solution combined with our volunteers hard work produced some amazing results.

Thank you to the Beechmont and Iroquois Neighborhood Associations for their continued nurturing and maintenance of the Churchman/Henry Avenue Cemetery- what a difference volunteer power can make!

A couple of years ago, the Cemetery looked much like what you see in the first picture below- there was only one headstone standing in the entire Cemetery (today there are nine) and the grass was much taller. Over time, our volunteers have put the pieces of the headstones and footstones back together like a jigsaw puzzle.

The two oldest headstones belonged to members of the Churchman family. The work they needed was not work that could be completed on-site at the Cemetery. A huge thank you to Loren Bays with Bays Brothers Monument Works of New Albany, Indiana for restoring Elijah's and Elizabeth's headstones.

And we have to add a solid thank you to Councilwoman Nicole George for bringing our volunteers together and her continued encouragement and participation.

It takes some dedicated volunteers to do Cemetery clean up at 10 AM when it is 15 degrees outside but that is exactly what our group is - dedicated! The sky is blue and the sun is shining!

We are still on for volunteer time tomorrow! Like Councilwoman George said, dress warm and we will work fast!

The Churchman/Henry St. Cemetery clean up is still on for Saturday morning at 10am. Please dress warmly and we'll work quickly. Nothing warms my spirit like neighbors helping neighbors!
