If you care about racial justice, belonging, and what it looks like to live that out in your church, this day is for you.

Join us Saturday, April 18 at Watkins Memorial UMC for “Love Overflowing” a day of worship, real conversation, and practical workshops you can take back to your community. You’ll hear from Rev. Abra Lattany-Reed and choose sessions on topics like supporting immigrant neighbors and building more inclusive ministries. This is a chance to learn, connect, and leave with next steps. Last week, the Extended Cabinet gathered at Jeffersontown United Methodist Church. Tuesday night took us to Mussel & Burger Bar for dinner. Jay Smith had us laughing (and maybe a little sentimental) with stories about Kevin Burney and Daniel Henson, who complete their time on Extended Cabinet in June.

Good food. Good people. Good moments.

We continue to take our conference-level gatherings on the road. Last week, that meant spending time at Jeffersontown United Methodist Church in the North District, across two days, as the entire Conference Staff gathered, followed by Extended Cabinet and Cabinet meetings.

The Cabinet shared lunch with North District pastors. We walked the building with Rev. Elizabeth Smith and her team. We saw their sanctuary, their prayer wall, and pieces of ministry you can’t fully understand unless you’re standing in the space.

In between all of that, we did the work. Conversations about healthy teams and how to navigate pastoral transitions well. This was our third time gathering as a full staff this year. That’s new for us too.

There’s something about being in the life of a local church that grounds everything. It reminds us who this work is for.

What does it look like to lead across difference? In the latest episode of Holy Roast, Rob and Rachel sit down with Rev. John Randolph, who pastors both Genesis UMC and Crescent Hill UMC in Louisville.

They get honest about:
✅ What it takes to serve two very different congregations
✅ How preaching shifts depending on context
✅ What the wider church can learn from the wisdom and practices of the Black church
✅ The real challenges and resilience required in cross-cultural ministry

Christ the Lord is risen today! Alleluia!

Today we celebrate the good news that still changes everything. Life has the final word and hope is alive.

Across Kentucky, we see it in the ways you love, serve, and show up for one another. The story of resurrection is not behind us. It is unfolding right now.

That building has held a lot over the years.

Meetings. Prayers. Conversations that weren’t always easy. Decisions that shaped churches across Kentucky.

Recently, we gathered there one more time. Not for a meeting, but to give thanks and say goodbye.

There was a lot to remember. And a clear sense that the work continues, just in different places now.

Take a look at a few moments from that service. https://www.kyumc.org/newsdetail/a-place-that-shaped-us-19666261

Today is Good Friday.

We pause at the cross.

Not rushing ahead to Easter. Staying here long enough to remember what love looks like when it costs something.

This week, Bishop Graves reminded us that peacemaking begins close to home. In how we speak and in how we listen. In how we choose grace when it would be easier to turn away.

Good Friday shows us that the way of Jesus is not passive.

It is costly and courageous. And it is rooted in a love that does not give up.

As we move through this day, we pray for peace in our homes, our churches, and in a world that is carrying so much.

May the peace of Christ begin with us.

A few years ago, they were the ones who needed help.

They were trying to rebuild their own home and figure out what came next.

Now they’re part of the disaster recovery team, showing up for other families walking through that same process. Rebuilding homes. Walking alongside people who are where they once were.

That kind of change doesn’t come from a program. It comes from experience.

Take a few minutes to read their story. https://www.kyumc.org/newsdetail/from-survivors-to-servants-one-familys-ongoing-call-to-rebuild-19664365

Have you ever experienced someone showing up for you when you needed it most?

A Holy Week Prayer for Peace

As we enter Holy Week, we follow Jesus toward the cross and toward the hope made known in the resurrection. This is always a sacred time for us, and this year it feels especially important to pause, pray, and seek the peace Christ promises.

We are living in days when division, fear, and uncertainty touch many of our communities. Families are strained. Conversations can become hurtful. The world around us continues to experience conflict and loss. In the midst of it all, Jesus reminds us of who we are called to be.

“God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Peacemaking begins close to home. It begins in the way we speak to one another, in our willingness to listen, and in our desire to understand when it would be easier to judge. It begins in our churches as we seek to care for one another with patience and compassion. These small acts of grace shape our hearts more than we often realize.

Our prayers also reach far beyond our own households. We lift up places in our world where violence continues and where people live with fear, grief, and loss. We pray for leaders who carry heavy responsibility. We pray for innocent people, for families displaced by conflict, and for those who long for safety and stability.

Holy Week teaches us that the way of Jesus is not passive. It asks us to follow him with courage and humility. The cross reminds us that peace often comes with cost. Yet the empty tomb assures us that God’s peace is real and possible, not through our strength but through God’s redeeming love at work in us.

This week, I invite you to practice peace with intention.

• Pray each day for peace in your home, your community, and our world.
• Look for a moment to extend grace where grace is needed.
• Listen with care, especially in a relationship that has felt strained or difficult.
• Ask how Christ is calling you to be a peacemaker in this season.

My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will lead us, comfort us, and shape us into people who reflect the love and peace of Christ. May we walk through this Holy Week with open hearts and renewed hope.

May the peace of Christ begin with us.

Grace and peace,
Bishop David Graves

Some families want to be at church. They just don’t know if church will work for them.

At Crestwood UMC, they decided to change that. Kids can move. Make noise. Take a break when they need to. Parents don’t have to apologize or explain anything.

One child who usually lasts 20 minutes in public stayed for an hour and a half. That tells you everything.

As we enter Holy Week, this is what it looks like when a church makes room for more people to belong. https://www.kyumc.org/newsdetail/they-thought-church-wasnt-for-them-then-everything-changed-19664407

Not everyone is ready to walk into a church. And that matters.

In Somerset, two young women from Somerset First UMC saw that and did something about it. They set up a small free library downtown filled with Bibles and devotionals. No pressure. No expectations. Just something there if someone is looking.

It’s simple. And it’s reaching people.

Take a minute and see what they built. https://www.kyumc.org/newsdetail/19666380

If you feel called to serve in the first days after a disaster or become better equipped to respond in your community when disaster strikes, now is the time to get trained.

Kentucky Conference Disaster Response is offering UMCOR Early Response Team Basic Certification training on March 21 at Christ Church UMC in Louisville.

Participants will learn debris removal, home clean up, roof tarping, and immediate steps that prevent further damage.

Completion of the class, a background check, and photo identification are required for certification and service on a District Early Response Team.
