Today, Good Friday, marks the ultimate expression of sacrifice and God’s Love for mankind. Although a day to be remembered for profound sacrifice, suffering and Love for humanity, we know that it is Good, because it is Finished. That statement “It is Finished” (John 19:30) was Christ’s final declaration on the cross signaling the completion of His earthly ministry, the fulfilling of prophecy, and ultimately the final payment for sin and salvation for all of mankind. It signifies that the sacrifice for sin was completed, establishing a finished work of grace, not a debt to be paid by human performance. It marks the victory over sin, shame, and death, marking a shift to a new era where salvation is a free gift, not to be earned.
Prophecy Fulfilled: Isaiah 53:3-5 “He is despised and rejected of men” “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
The Sacrifice: John 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost."
The Hope: Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Ephesians 2:8&9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Today we should pause and examine our Salvation and the price that was paid for it. We should thank God for the immense sacrifice of His Son Jesus and become humbled by the pain that brought us peace. Let us remember today to appreciate the full weight of the cross and remember that our Salvation is nothing that can ever be earned, we must instead rest in the Finished work of Christ.
If you today you don’t have that blessed assurance of where you will spend eternity, accept that you are a sinner (Romans 3:23), that the penalty is death, but God offers eternal life (Romans 6:23) and that Salvation is gained by believing in the death on the cross, the burial and resurrection of Christ (Romans 5:8). When you believe this simple message and trust it you become justified in the eyes of God (Romans 5:1). This Salvation is a simple gift, that is permanent the moment the believer makes that free will choice to accept it (Ephesians 1:13).
