God, please give us wisdom, and yes, courage to feel sympathy, not glee, when someone we dislike encounters trouble. Help us refrain from celebrating the misfortune of others, even when we feel that it is deserved. Instead, give us compassionate hearts so that we might faithfully follow the footsteps of your Son.

Small deeds of goodness in the aftermath of trouble, like fireflies flickering against the dark sky, can blanket the world with sparkling lights.

How comforting and inspiring to know, Lord, that we aren't the first to travel roads pitted with questions, doubts, and temptations! Point us to your marvelous Word, where we can join hands with our ancestors of faith and link the foundation of the past with the potential of the future.

Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible."

When we grow discouraged, God, raise our eyes toward spiderwebs spun in a corner and remind us that no hope is to small. At first glance, the webs look fragile insignificant strands, but, in fact, they have amazing strength. And consider what those webs do for the spider. They bring it sustenance. Help us twist our own tiny strands of hope into sturdy ropes of commitment when we take the next step toward the tasks you are calling us to. Amen.
