Throughout the trip, our youth enjoyed plenty of fun and fellowship together. We enjoyed exploring the City Museum, seeing animals at the St. Louis Zoo, and hanging out with Our Savior’s youth at DCE Grace’s childhood home. We also played tons of euchre! Evan writes, “The thing that I enjoyed about the Saint Louis trip was hanging out with members of our church. I learned a new game that I now love and talk about to my family.”

Thank you for your prayers and your financial support that made it possible for us to attend Higher Things! Nathan writes, “I really enjoyed being able to strengthen my relationship with God.” Wyatt adds, “A lot of what I learned I will bring with me in the future.”

This was a memorable trip, and we are grateful to God that we could receive His gifts and learn more about His Word.

Here is what our students wrote about their favorite sessions at Higher Things:

On “Rising Hope on Judgment Day” by Rev. James Douthwaite: “I found out that Lutherans should see Judgment Day not as something to be afraid of. Judgment Day is when Christ comes back. We believe that He’s already taken the punishment for people who believe in Him when He died and came back to life. We are saved by believing in God and not by how good we are. That’s why we look forward to Jesus coming back with confidence, not fear. Christ’s return is the moment when everything will be made right. Believers will experience the “blessed hope” that Titus 2:13 talks about. If God doesn’t condemn us now, why will it be different on Judgment Day?” –Nathan

On “Jesus vs. Tate” by Rev. Jeff Hemmer: “This breakaway really helped me learn about how men and women have their sets of strengths and weaknesses, and they have to work together to accomplish things easier. Jesus has a plan and will help us to follow it in partnership with others. We shall respect God’s plan.” –Ben

On “Missions in Lands of Witchcraft” by Dr. Martin Dicke: “I learned that there are many people who spread the Gospel in places where witchcraft has an impact on the culture. The speaker’s main example was that many missionaries in Russia don’t have success because Russians are afraid of Christian beliefs. This is because Russia was known for burning or shutting down churches in the Baltics (Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia). This made me realize how important it is to pray for missionaries. People around the world can find peace and comfort through Christ.” –Evan

On “Mortal Kombat” by Rev. Timothy Lorenz: “Mortal Kombat focused on the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues. What I learned and found interesting from this class was what gluttony, sloth, and envy meant. Gluttony means to eat instead of doing what is asked of you, especially when told by God. Sloth is putting work that needs to be done aside, and envy means not only being jealous, but also wanting to be better than our neighbor and bringing them down for their win.” –Wyatt

This summer, four of Concordia’s youth traveled to St. Louis, MO to attend a Higher Things conference. The conference was titled “Dying Church, Rising Hope.” We praise God for the unshaking hope we have in Jesus! Even when church membership shrinks and congregations close, we know that God will sustain His people and keep His Church forever.

Most days at Higher Things, we participated in four worship services! We met for matins in the morning, vespers after lunch, evening prayer after dinner, and compline before bed. Each of these prayer offices are part of our hymnal (the Lutheran Service Book) and have a rich history in the Christian Church, but they are less familiar to many Christians today. Our youth took part in these prayer offices, as well as Divine Services with communion to open and close the conference. These worship services centered our whole week around God and His gifts. With all 750 conference participants singing hymns together, the chapel building almost shook in praise to our Lord! Wyatt writes, “I really liked the hymns we sang during most of the services. Also, the whole congregation singing together sounded amazing.”

Each day we learned from plenary speakers and breakaway sessions. Ben writes, “I really loved the breakaways because I learned about Christ and how He saves us. The breakaways really helped me learn because of the entertaining pastors.” Our students got to choose from a long list of breakaway sessions on various topics.
