THIS MONTH’S MEDITATION SCRIPTURE: But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to be called children of God, even to those who believe on His name…John 1:12
Your House Will Crumble if Your Foundation is Faulty
I would submit that the firmest possible foundation for our lives as believers is our identity in Christ. John’s gospel tells us in the verse above that when we receive Jesus, at that moment the Father has given us the right to be called His children. Paul writes to the Galatian church in 3:26 that we are all sons and daughters of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And Paul further explains that anyone in Christ has become a new creation, leaving the old person behind in 2 Corinthians 5:17. What more should we need to solidify our identities in Christ Jesus alone?
Yet, there are thousands of believers who still cling to their identity as gay Christians, proclaiming to the world that ‘son or daughter of God’ must be qualified and remain linked to the sin that they’ve supposedly left behind. As if they themselves and everyone else need to be reminded of it! Nowhere in the Bible is a child of God given an adjective to describe sin as a believer, at least not that I’ve ever found.
It is a sad thing that two well-known men who identify as gay Christians found themselves the subjects of widely publicized news stories earlier this month related to their LGBTQ status. One was removed from his pastoral position because of an inappropriate relationship with another man a few years ago while he was an associate pastor. The other was apprehended in a police sting operation when he thought he was meeting up for s*x with a 14-year-old boy he’d been in contact with, when in reality it was the police with whom the man was engaging online.
I am not saying that a Christian man or woman who is attracted to the same gender and does not continue to identify as LGBTQ will never have a serious fall in the way either of these men did. I am saying, though, that hanging on to an identity as a believer that Father God has not given us, puts us at great risk because with taking upon ourselves such a label, we’ve already put a serious crack in our foundation as a temple of God; one that can lead to destruction. I maintain now, as I have for many years, that the false identity of gay Christian is not one for a disciple of Jesus who is building his life on a firm foundation. Rather, that identity is one that will crack the foundation, and everything built upon that cracked foundation will not only be faulty in and of itself, but it will cause the crack to spread further and crumble into ruin the entire structure.
“Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy and that is what you are.” 1 Cor 3:16,17
