Highland Presbyterian Church

Highland Presbyterian Church We are a progressive Christian community where all are welcome! Worship services at 11am each Sunday.

The community that became Highland Presbyterian Church first met in 1873 in a local physician’s home. They created a Sabbath School for children and an adult prayer meeting. A larger meetinghouse was built in 1876 where Highland Presbyterian Church now stands at the corner of Cherokee Road and Highland Avenue. Established in the Highlands neighborhood of Louisville, Highland Presbyterian Church wa

s the first church officially organized in 1882. The current sanctuary was built in 1888 in the shape of a Greek cross. The Courier-Journal remarked at the dedication that it was as “pretty a little church edifice as could be found in the city.”

From that point to the present, this has been a place of worship where a Presbyterian community has committed to learn and grow in faith. As it has done so, the church expanded, building the Sunday School Building in 1916 (expanded in 1930) and the Walker-Nevin Education Building in 1960. In 2007, the church renovated the old Parr’s Rest building into the Pleune-Mobley Center. Currently, the Center houses the Youth Ministry and Mission Center and is home to Kentucky Refugee Ministries (www.kyrm.org). From the early days to the present, people have left the doors of the church to be a part of God’s life in the world. From the Great Flood of 1937, to starting mission churches through the 20th century, to Civil Rights, to refugee resettlement, Highland Presbyterian Church is committed to follow wherever God is calling us to today and tomorrow. Come be a part of a Christian community that is "Sharing Hope from the Heart of the Highlands."

Starting with Abram, the book of Genesis makes a big shift. Before him we're offered mythic stories about how the world got to be like it is. From here on the stories tell the history of a specific family, the people of Abram (renamed by God as Abraham). This Sunday at 11:00 we’ll hear the story of God first calling Abram to leave home, venture into the unknown, and become a blessing to many.

See you in church or worship with us online.

HPC started Pride Month with a great outing at the Racing Louisville FC match. This month reminds us how precious each of us is in God's eyes. While we are each unique, we are bonded by a common humanity, and we ALL are God's children.

This Pride Month, we celebrate our differences, work toward justice for all people, and continue to build an atmosphere of Christlike love and acceptance at HPC.

This is a rare Sunday of the church year when we'll celebrate not an event or a season, but a theological mystery. The Trinity is a way of understanding God on more than one level. God who is our rock is also the Holy Spirit of all wisdom who is also Jesus who yearns to gather his people like a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wing. In worship at 11am Sunday we’ll sing and speak and pray about the Holy Trinity as God’s love overflowing — the very sea on which the church floats as a boat.

Join us in person or online for worship.

Then immediately following worship please stay for a brief congregational meeting at which we’ll receive and vote on nominations for our new classes of elders, deacons, and Nominating Committee members. Thanks be to God for fresh hearts and minds and hands serving the church and the world!

Join us this Sunday, May 17, for Faith Formation Sunday!

There will be an Adult Education opportunity in Fellowship Hall at 9:30 am. Kyle Ellison will be here to talk with us about ICE and specifically as it pertains to our jail system.

Then, at 11:00 am, we will worship together and hear the story from the book of Acts of Jesus’ ascension. We will have the wonderful opportunity to celebrate our Sunday School teachers and Youth Sponsors, our 5th graders, and our high school seniors! We will also receive new members and get to hear our HPC orchestra!

It should be a wonderful day of celebration and joy. We hope you can join us!

Join us for an evening of music with internationally acclaimed Italian pianist Davide Logiri and special guest artist Michael Tracy on Wednesday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church.

Blending classical artistry with the spontaneity and color of jazz, Logiri’s performances are known for their lyricism, virtuosity, and stylistic breadth, while Tracy—described as an “Ambassador of Jazz”—brings decades of acclaimed international performing and teaching experience to the stage.

Free and open to the public.

So much human violence has erupted out of religious differences. The apostle Paul, first-century traveling evangelist, shows us a far more faithful approach. One of Paul's missionary journeys takes him to the pluralistic city of Athens where, respectfully and insightfully, he shares the good news of Jesus Christ resurrected.

This Sunday we’ll explore that story from Acts 17 — see you in worship at 11:00am in the sanctuary or online.

This Sunday, May 3 at 11 a.m., we will worship at Cedar Ridge’s chapel overlooking the lake. There will be vibrant worship with music, a wonderful potluck lunch, and a chance to be in nature — canoeing on the lake, hiking in the woods, or simply sitting and watching it all.

Please bring a side dish or dessert to share! Make note that there will not be worship in the HPC sanctuary this day. (We need volunteers on Sunday to help serve and clean up lunch.)

In our gospel stories this Easter season Jesus describes himself with a lot of metaphors. This Sunday in John 10 we'll hear Jesus say, “I am the gate for the sheep” — and later in the chapter he says “I am the shepherd.” Come to 11:00 worship and hear why sheep are so prominent in the Bible and in Jesus’ imagery about discipleship.
