“When I pray, You answer me; You encourage me by giving me the strength I need.”
Psalm 138:3

The moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, God gives us a completely new life.

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come!" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

However, there is always the temptation to go back to our old life. Sometimes we forget how empty life is without Christ.

The nation of Israel forgot what their life was like as slaves in Egypt. Even though they had the promise of God for a new life in the Promised Land, some longed for the “old days” of Egypt (Numbers 11:5).

Moses sought to reason with them:

"For the land, into which you are entering to possess it, is not like the land of Egypt from which you came…but it is … a land that the LORD your God cares for. He watches over it day after day throughout the year!" (Deuteronomy 11:10,12)

The Lord pleads with us not to return to our old lifestyle and habits. He wants you and me to know that what He offers is far superior to anything this world has to offer. It is a life that has no comparison to anything on earth!

The temptation to go back to our old life is real. It may be old friends that drag us away from the Lord, or addictive habits to numb our pain, or a lifestyle that offers empty promises, worry and anxiety.

God wants us to truly trust Him for a new life…a life where He cares for us and watches over us day after day.

We must not be deceived that there is a better life for us than what the Lord offers. He knows us better than we know ourselves! He will give us the life He created us to enjoy!

When God created this world, He intended for us to experience joy in life. But if you listen to conversations around you, you will soon realize that not everyone is feeling joyful. Negativity may be at an all-time high…and it is easy to see how this can be. Life can have its challenges. To be without joy, however, is not what God intended. He has given us life to enjoy. Just as a parent delights in seeing his or her child happy, so God delights in seeing His children happy and enjoying this world He has created.

Israel’s destiny was to enter the Promised Land. While there, God wanted them to enjoy it. He told them to take pleasure in life and pleasure in Him.

“There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you.” (Deuteronomy 12:7)

He wants you and me to take pleasure in every day. He simply asks if He can share this joy with us…and we will find that we enjoy all things more when we include God. Let’s make it our goal this week to enjoy life and the pleasures God gives. There is enough pressure, stress, and things to worry about in this world. Why not take some time to simply enjoy this week God has given us and focus on our relationship with Him? It will bring Him pleasure and it will bring us pleasure.

David had learned this himself. His real joy and satisfaction came from his relationship with God.

“You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of Your presence and the pleasures of living with You forever.” (Psalm 16:11)

Facing the future is not always easy. Going off to school, taking on a new job, moving, getting married, losing a spouse by death or divorce, having kids, even facing a sickness can be very scary. It is always the unknown that is most unsettling. What lies ahead in terms of world difficulties (terrorism, disasters, gasoline prices, inflation, etc) can unsettle most people.

However, no matter what we are facing or ever will face in life, God wants us to know His promise for us. It is the same promise He gave to Joshua and the people of Israel as they faced an unknown future.

"The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." (Deuteronomy 31:8)

This means that whatever chapter we are in our life, God has already gone before and He knows the end of it. We do not have to be afraid or anxious. Even Jesus told His disciples that as the Good Shepherd, He goes on before them (John 10:4).

Right now, we have the promise from God that He is with us. He has gone before us and He will not let us go or abandon us. Even if we feel deserted or alone, we are not. God wants us to face each day with confidence and optimism. Your future and my future are as bright as the promise God gave to Joshua and the Israelites!

Have you ever wondered if your life counts for anything? When someone we love passes away, we realize with a deep awareness just how much that person meant to us. And to know that our loved one is at the place that God designed to be his/her permanent home is the most comforting, reassuring blessing that one can have. The Apostle Paul looked forward to that day also. He said:

“In the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” (2 Timothy 4:8)

Losing a loved one causes us to reflect on the brevity of life and more than ever realize the importance of having our life count for God. Does how we live and Whom we live for make a difference? Just ask the Apostle Paul and all the other great saints who have gone on before us.

God’s greatest desire is that you and I would love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Our eternal reward depends on it!

God wants you to know that there is more to reality than just what you can see. He is with you more that you realize.

A clear example of this is found in Elisha and his servant when they were targeted for assignation by the king of Aram.

“When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. ‘Ah, my lord, what will we do now?’ he cried out to Elisha. ‘Don't be afraid!’ Elisha told him. ‘For there are more on our side than on theirs!’ Then Elisha prayed, ‘O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!’ The LORD opened his servant's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.” (2 Kings 6:15-17)

They were easily rescued by the Lord and several things become evident from this story:

The servant’s problem was that he was looking at the situation from his perspective, not God’s.

One plus God makes a majority.

Spiritual insight comes by prayer.

The battle is the Lord’s.

Faith is seeing that which is unseen.

If we could see what God sees, then we would live differently. We would live supernaturally. As His child, you are surrounded by angels and His power. Knowing this is how you live supernaturally by faith. “We live by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
This passage of Scripture encourages us to live courageously, fearlessly, and confidently!

Over the course of our lifetime we will encounter people who are easy to deal with…and then there will be those persons who challenge us because they just simply rub us the wrong way. What does Scripture tell us about dealing with “difficult” people?

"The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged." (2 Timothy 2:24 NASB)

As a follower of Christ, we are to handle people with extra care. We are instructed in this passage to:

1. Not be quarrelsome. This is the verbal fighting that happens when we want to prove we are right. All it does is act like sandpaper against the skin of the other person. It is not effective.

2. Be kind to all. (Not just kind to some). This is referring more to being understanding, compassionate and saying gracious things instead of being harsh or mean.

3. Able to teach. People are more apt to being taught by those who are kind to them. This is how God wants us to instruct others rather than argue.

4. Patient when wronged. One translation puts it this way: "be patient with difficult people" (2 Timothy 2:24 NLT). There will always be difficult people in our lives. We also will be wronged many times in life. But God is asking you and me to not fly off the handle when someone offends us or hurts us. He wants us to show incredible patience with the actions of others, especially difficult people. (A difficult person might be described as one who doesn’t agree with us.). He also wants us to be patient by allowing Him to deal with the injustice that comes our way rather than take it into our own hands.

God wants to use you and me in the lives of others to make a difference for all eternity. He will give us the ability we need to be a blessing to each and every person in our life!

Have you ever had a mentor or someone who encouraged and advised you in life? What a tremendous impact they must have had in your life. That what was Paul was to Timothy, his mentor. In 2 Timothy, Paul wrote to his faithful disciple Timothy. He wanted to convey the things that were most important in life to Timothy in the last book that Paul wrote. He told Timothy,

"But you, be watchful at all times, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." (2 Timothy 4:5)

He was telling Timothy that living for the Lord is not always going to be easy. It means to be watchful at the world around us and the spiritual battles we face. We need to hang in there during the hard times, keep reaching out to those who don’t know Christ, and most importantly for us, He wants us to fulfill our ministry. Our ministry lasts our entire life.

God wants us to end our life completely satisfied. Every day is a chance to minister for Him. No matter what's happened in the past or what is happening now in our lives , He still wants to use each one of us every day!

Have you ever set unrealistic goals for yourself that you couldn’t accomplish? Setting goals can be difficult at times, especially if you don’t know where you are headed. A great example from the Bible about setting goals comes from Paul. He set his goals based upon the eternal race that he was running and he found his strength in the Lord to finish it.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)

There are three things God wants you and me to know:

1. We are in a fight worth fighting. But we can’t fight alone; only with the Lord’s strength can we overcome the fight.

2. We can finish the course. There is only one course that leads to victory and by being faithful to Jesus Christ, we will finish it.

3. We can finish life having kept the faith. For Paul, having kept the faith throughout his life was his most satisfying goal.

Our goal for today and for the rest of our lives must be to stay faithful in the midst of adversities, to do the Lord’s will, and to finish the purpose God has for us. We must stay faithful to Him no matter what!

Life can get weighed down with too many responsibilities, can’t it? So often our lives become encumbered just trying to make it through the day. Unfortunately, the urgent causes us to miss out on that which is most important.

"No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of every day life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier." (2 Timothy 2:4)

A soldier has one goal, to please his or her commander. It simplifies life.

If life seems entangled and complicated today, if it seems to rob you of the joy and peace God wants for you, if it seems cluttered with too many plates spinning, then you have to ask yourself who you are really trying to please.

Paul expressed this same concern to the Corinthians.

"But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:3)

Don't let the "clutter" of life take you away from that which is most important. Ask the Lord to "untangle" your day to day activities. Resolve to “de-clutter” your life!

God will give you the grace you need every day for whatever situation you are in. This is your means of strength to handle any situation you face. The Apostle Paul, told Timothy his disciple:

“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 2:1)

Notice that this is first a command to be strong. It is not an option for us to be weak. There is nothing in our lives that is to be stronger than us except the Lord.

This is also a command to be strong in the grace of Jesus Christ and not in ourselves. It is a promise that His grace will be our strength. It is not what we are able to do for ourselves but what He is able to do for us. God never wants us to rely on ourselves but on Him! This way He receives the credit and the glory.

But this verse also tells us that His grace is available to you and me every day for every situation. This means that whatever you need today, He will give you the grace to make it through! He doesn’t give you the grace you need for tomorrow today. He will give you the grace you need for tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Our relationship with God is on a daily basis only! God’s grace is available and it is sufficient for whatever our need may be!
