Who was J. Gresham Machen?

J. Gresham Machen (1881-1937) was a prominent American theologian, scholar, and professor who played a significant role in the early 20th-century defense of conservative Presbyterianism and orthodox Christianity. He is best known for his opposition to theological liberalism, which he believed undermined the foundational truths of Christianity. In response to the rise of modernist ideas in the church, Machen became a staunch advocate for biblical inerrancy, the divinity of Christ, and traditional Reformed theology. His most influential book, Christianity and Liberalism (1923), argued that liberalism was a different religion altogether, separate from historic Christianity.
