Solidarity Action After Every Louisville Homicide
No one wants to lose someone they love, especially not to senseless or random violence. If this is true, then what can we do to transform the violence that exists in our city? Louisville’s Arms of Compassion invites everyone to recognize that we are interrelated by the very air that we breathe, through the city we share, and by our common humanity
. It invites us to choose to stand together and declare that we are all family. It encourages us to support those suffering from their loss of a loved one. It challenges us to commit to disarm any situation of violence we encounter – words, actions, or even our own thoughts. Whenever someone is murdered, Louisville’s Arms of Compassion will gather people of good will into a 30-minute solidarity gathering. We will meet within 48 hours in Jefferson Square to
• share the name of our brother or sister who was killed
• offer words and mindful silence in support of their family and friends
• take a personal pledge to foster nonviolence and compassion wherever we live, work or study
We are all related. We refuse to be separated by religious tradition, skin color, economic background, and age. We are one city and the violent loss of anyone is a loss for everyone. Louisville’s Arms of Compassion is an initiative of Drepung Gomang Center for Engaging Compassion in collaboration with organizations city-wide including: Passionist Earth & Spirit Center Compassion in Action Committee, St. William Church, Interfaith Paths to Peace, Highland Baptist Church, Compassionate Louisville, Muslim Americans for Compassion, Global Human Project, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Sowers of Justice Network, ElderCounsel, Stand Up Sunday Stand Up Louisville Black Lives Matter, Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Social Action, First Unitarian Mission and Outreach, and more.
