Good Shepherd Center Partners with Mount Zion Church to Launch New Mobile Food Initiative

MONROE COUNTY, TN — The Good Shepherd Center has partnered with Mount Zion Church in Vonore to launch a new mobile food distribution program, successfully delivering 40 boxes of free groceries to local families. This initiative specifically serves individuals and families who face transportation barriers preventing them from visiting the main Good Shepherd Center facility.

"Due to the successful launch and positive response from the church members, we will continue this program," said Charles Lindberg, project coordinator and Board of Directors member. "Our team secured the food in the morning, prepared 40 boxes, and began distribution at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. We plan to do this every month going forward and look forward to incorporating other local churches."

The Good Shepherd Center serves more than 650 Monroe County families every month by providing food, clothing, medical vouchers, emergency assistance, and specialized programming at no cost. During the summer months, the center also operates a summer food program that provides daily lunches to more than 800 school-aged children.

Operating entirely without federal financial support, the center relies solely on the efforts of over 120 volunteers and community donations. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Good Shepherd Center accepts financial contributions online, as well as donations of stocks, property, automobiles, and directed RMD/QCD contributions from IRA or 401(k) accounts.

The ELCA has received a $1.2 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its initiative Hope After the Storm: Capacity Building for Faith-Based Disaster Relief Organizations.

The grant will enable Lutheran Disaster Response to strengthen its capacity to support communities through sustained, long-term recovery.

LDR’s work — in both domestic and international settings — is focused on its commitment to accompany communities through the full recovery process, remaining long after a disaster occurs.

Through this grant, LDR will strengthen its work in domestic settings by focusing on two areas that are essential to sustaining its long-term approach to disaster recovery: expanding its emotional and spiritual care capacity and strengthening sustainable donor engagement for long-term recovery needs.
