2026 Reading Camp South County Volunteers and Donations Needed! 2026 Reading Camp, which will be held August 3-7, is for students going into grades 2-5 who live in South County. We serve students who hate reading or have reading difficulties. Each year we ask the school reading teachers to identify potential students for us and do the recruitment. We serve students from Lothian, Tracey’s, Deale, and Shady Side elementary schools. After the families return our registration forms to the schools, we are then able to reach out and finalize the registration process.

At camp, teachers teach instructional groups all morning, i.e., comprehension, vocabulary, visualization, and writing. Students rotate through each subject. We have Book Buddy volunteers who travel with the students as they go through their scheduled activities. Afternoons are for fun activities, such as author visits, guest speakers, field trips, arts/crafts, and music.

On the last day of camp, every student will go home with a bag of books and a backpack of school supplies. School supplies correspond to the public school lists. Finally, we feed each child breakfast, lunch, and two snacks.

To make all this happen, we need you! It costs about $200 per student to provide this program, and we are aiming to host 30 students. Donations of any amount can be given to the Parish office. We appreciate the way the St. James’ parishioners have supported us for many years and helped us help our community.

If you have art experience, we would welcome your thoughts and ideas for activities. We would also welcome your help at camp! Book Buddy volunteers are needed to be with the students as they move through the day (no teaching experience needed). Our arts/crafts team can use helpers on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. We are always looking for people with teaching experience to help in the mornings.

For more information, to volunteer, or to make a financial donation of support, please contact Paula Davis, Reading Camp Coordinator, at [email protected]

Sunday Services at St. James Parish - Whether your soul feels anchored, wandering, hopeful, or weary, you are welcome here. At God’s table, there is room for everyone—no exceptions, no prerequisites, no perfection required. Come just as you are.

8am – We meet for Holy Eucharist at St. Mark’s Chapel in Deale, right on the grounds of Herrington Harbour North Marina (361 Deale Rd, Tracys Landing, MD 20779). This service is quiet and contemplative: no music, a smaller crowd, the beautiful traditional language of the Book of Common Prayer, and our historic chapel surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Chesapeake Bay. Worship at St. Mark’s usually lasts around forty-five minutes.

10 am - We celebrate Holy Eucharist together at St. James’ Church in Lothian (5757 Solomons Island Rd, Lothian, MD 20711). This service is the largest gathering of our community, with full choir and music. You’ll find a little bit of everything here, from beloved hymns to contemporary praise music, from the warm welcome of a loving community to the drama of our ancient prayers.

Worship with us from wherever you are. Hope. Prayer. Community.
Join our livestream on Sundays at 10am— we’d love to have you with us. http://www.youtube.com/

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭4‬

We celebrated Pentecost on Sunday with Messy Church and a parish cookout. A church birthday celebration wouldn’t be complete without a birthday cake & cupcakes.
