This Tuesday marked one year since the Godmothers of the Disappeared formed in response to the immigration raids in Southern California.
For a year, every Tuesday at noon, women of faith have gathered in front of the Federal Building wearing pink bandanas, invoking prayer, song and testimony, to demand the release of those being disappeared by our government, and for federal agents to leave their positions and put down their weapons.
The Godmothers observed this anniversary with prayers for renewed faith in the struggle, for finding comfort in one another as a means to continue, and to never forget the people inside, who can hear the vigil from inside the building.
Detention center visitors and family members have shared that for people who are in these places, hearing people on the outside are fighting for them provides a meaningful amount of strength, so they can believe the situation they are facing will one day end.
