Mass Mob of Southern California

Mass Mob of Southern California Inspired by the Mass Mobs of Detroit and Buffalo, we seek to create and enhance public awareness of Southern California's historic and diverse parishes.

We seek to create and enhance public awareness of Southern California's historic and diverse Catholic parishes, churches, cathedrals and missions, through planned (and perhaps spontaneous) organization. Our hope is to fill the pews with genuinely interested church goers during a regular Sunday mass and provide a "shot in the arm" for those churches that may be struggling to keep their doors open.

Become part of an upcoming "Mass Mob" of church goers and support the many historic or struggling parishes in our region, many of which may have been the ancestral church of your family or loved ones. The Los Angeles Archdiocese is home to the largest Catholic population in the United States. This, together with the Diocese of Orange (which is one of the fastest growing dioceses in the United States) means that there are plenty of Catholics who need vibrant places of worship or perhaps just awareness of what's out there. We plan to identify a church or parish in our region (namely within Los Angeles and Orange counties) to coordinate a Mass Mob. We hope to be able to have an official church announced one month in advance, to allow for participants to plan their schedules. The Mass Mob concept is derived from the various "flash mobs" that show up in sudden, large numbers in different public venues all for a single purpose. Oftentimes these flash mobs are captured on camera and go viral online. Our ultimate purpose here, however, is for the greater glory of God and to show universal solidarity in our Catholic faith as members of the body of Christ. The whole endeavor requires very little obligation for participants. Those interested simply follow and show up to churches as we announce them for a Sunday liturgy. Feel free to capture your visits and share them with us. Though the intended audience are for people baptized and properly initiated in the Catholic faith, we do welcome our brothers and sisters from other denominations and faith traditions to explore more about the Catholic Church through your local parish and priests. Ad majorem Dei gloriam.

We’re here visiting St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Oregon today. His Excellency, Archbishop Alexander Sample is the ordinary of the Portland archdiocese. We were amazed at the choir of the 11am Sunday mass, but would wish that the cathedral had more masses on Sunday and additional confession times. Keep the Portland diocese in your prayers, as it is in the middle of one of the most liberal (and non-Christian) parts of the country.
