[목회서신] 깊이는 속도가 아니라 고요 속에 자랍니다. | Depth Grows Not in Speed, but in Stillness.

우리는 속도를 숭배하는 시대 속에 살고 있습니다. 더 빨리, 더 많이, 더 앞서가야 한다는 압박 속에서 살아갑니다. 그러나 우리 영혼은 속도가 아니라 고요 속에서 자랍니다. 속도는 불안과 조급함, 그리고 산만함을 낳습니다. 광속의 시대 속에 살고 있는 어린아이들과 청년들은 심각한 정서적 혼란과 깊은 내적 고통을 겪고 있습니다. 속도만을 추구하면 관계는 피상적이 됩니다. 피상적인 관계는 결국 공허를 낳습니다. 겉이 화려할수록 속은 더 비어 있을 수 있습니다. 빠른 속도가 만들어 낸 성공과 성취는 깊은 만족을 주기보다는 공허를 낳습니다. 그래서 우리는 성공의 사다리를 올라갔다가 추락을 경험한 사람들을 자주 만납니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 선물해 주기 원하시는 삶은 깊은 만족의 삶입니다. 깊고 친밀한 사랑의 삶입니다. 그래서 우리는 묻습니다. 왜 깊이가 중요할까요? 깊이는 어떻게 자라는 것일까요?
첫째, 깊이는 서두름이 아니라 머묾에서 자랍니다. 우리는 빨리 배우고, 빨리 성공하고, 빨리 결과를 만들어 내길 원합니다. 하지만 깊이는 빠른 속도로 만들어지지 않습니다. 깊이는 오래 머물 때 형성됩니다. 말씀 앞에 오래 머물 때 깊은 묵상의 세계로 들어갈 수 있습니다. 깊이는 반복을 통해 자랍니다. 반복은 깊음으로 들어가는 문입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 묵상하는 비결도 반복에 있습니다. 하나님은 말씀을 반복해서 주야로 묵상하는 사람이 복이 있다고 말씀하십니다(시 1:1-3; 수 1:8). 깊이는 머묾에 있습니다. 작은 꽃 앞에 잠시 머물러 보십시오 한 송이 꽃을 고요히 바라보십시오. 그 안에 담긴 하나님의 섬세한 손길에 경탄하게 될 것입니다. 오래 머물수록 이전에 보지 못했던 것을 보게 됩니다. 말씀 한 절을 읽고, 암송하고, 묵상하십시오. 오랫동안 그 말씀에 머물러 다양한 각도로 묵상해 보십시오. 놀라운 깨달음이 찾아올 것입니다. 서두르지 마십시오. 속도를 늦추십시오.
뿌리 깊은 나무에게서 머묾의 지혜를 배울 수 있습니다. 나무는 한 곳에 심기면 그곳에 오래 머뭅니다. 자주 옮겨 심으면 뿌리를 내릴 수 없습니다. 결국 말라 버릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 나무는 조용히 보이지 않는 곳에서 뿌리를 내립니다. 겉으로 보이는 성장은 느릴지라도 뿌리는 깊어집니다. 깊이 뿌리 내린 나무는 쉽게 흔들리지 않습니다. 깊이는 보이지 않는 곳에서 자라나 보이는 삶을 지탱합니다. 큰 나무는 속도에 집착하지 않습니다. 서서히 뿌리를 깊이 내린 나무는 마침내 거목(巨木)이 됩니다.
둘째, 깊이는 소음이 아니라 고요 속에 자랍니다. 깊이가 없으면 삶은 소음이 됩니다. 말은 많지만 울림이 없습니다. 고요는 깊음으로 들어가는 길입니다. 속도는 우리를 바깥으로 끌어내지만, 고요는 우리를 내면으로 인도합니다. 우리 영혼은 고요를 좋아합니다. 고요한 영혼이 깊은 영혼입니다. 고요 속으로 들어가기 위해서는 침묵을 훈련해야 합니다. 침묵 가운데 머물러 기다리면 마음이 점점 고요해집니다. 산만했던 생각은 하나로 모이고, 요동치던 감정은 잠잠해집니다. 고요 속에서 우리는 거짓 자아가 아니라 참 자아를 발견합니다. 고요 속에서 하나님을 더욱 깊이 알게 됩니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(시 46:10). 하나님을 아는 것보다 더 고상한 지식은 없습니다. 하나님을 아는 것은 하나님과의 친밀한 교제 속에 들어가는 것입니다. 침묵할 때 하나님의 세미한 음성을 듣게 됩니다. 비둘기처럼 조용히 임하시는 성령님의 임재를 경험하게 됩니다.
셋째, 고요는 깊이 있는 변화를 만들어 냅니다. 빠른 변화는 쉽게 무너집니다. 반면에 깊은 변화는 오래 지속됩니다. 때로는 말씀을 빠르게 많이 읽는 것도 필요합니다. 성경을 통독하면 전체의 흐름을 파악할 수 있습니다. 그러나 동시에 말씀을 깊이 읽는 훈련이 필요합니다. 깊은 묵상이 깊은 변화를 만들어 냅니다. 말씀을 깊이 묵상할 때 그 말씀이 우리 존재 속에 스며듭니다. 지식으로 머물던 말씀이 생명이 되어 우리를 변화시킵니다(히 4:12). 깊이는 시간을 필요로 합니다. 그러나 그 깊이는 결코 우리를 배반하지 않습니다. 고요 속에서 자란 변화는 삶 전체를 새롭게 합니다. 속도를 조금 내려놓으십시오. 서두름을 조금 내려놓으십시오. 그리고 고요 속에 머무십시오
깊이는 시간과 침묵과 고요를 친구로 삼습니다. 너무 빨리 가려고 애쓰지 마십시오. 대신 깊어지려고 노력하십시오. 깊어지려면 잠시 멈추고, 조용히 앉아 하나님 앞에 머무는 시간이 필요합니다. 하나님의 말씀 앞에 고요히 머무는 시간이 필요합니다. 고요 속에서 우리 영혼은 다시 소생합니다. 고요 속에서 하나님을 더욱 깊이 만나게 됩니다. 깊이는 속도가 아니라 고요 속에서 자랍니다. 오늘도 조용히, 그러나 깊이 자라가십시오. 모국집회를 인도하는 중에 종종 고요한 시간을 갖곤 합니다. 고요한 영혼으로 말씀을 전할 때 사람들을 깊은 말씀의 세계로 인도할 수 있기 때문입니다. 저는 이 글을 울산에서 말씀을 전하는 중에 쓰고 있습니다. 부족한 종의 모국 집회를 위해 기도해 주시는 한 분 한 분께 깊이 감사드립니다.

Depth Grows Not in Speed, but in Stillness.
We live in an age that worships speed. We are constantly pressured to go faster, achieve more, and get ahead. Yet our souls do not grow through speed, but through stillness. Speed breeds anxiety, impatience, and distraction. Children and young people growing up in this age of relentless acceleration often suffer from deep emotional confusion and inner pain. When we pursue only speed, our relationships become superficial—and superficial relationships eventually lead to emptiness. The more dazzling the exterior, the emptier the interior can become. The success and achievement produced by speed rarely bring deep satisfaction; instead, they often leave behind a sense of emptiness. That is why we so often encounter those who have climbed the ladder of success only to experience a fall. The life God desires to give us is one of deep satisfaction—a life of profound and intimate love. So we ask: Why does depth matter? And how does depth grow?
First, depth grows not in haste, but in abiding. We want to learn quickly, succeed quickly, and produce results quickly. But depth cannot be formed at a fast pace. It is cultivated through long abiding. When we remain in the Word, we enter into the world of deep meditation. Depth grows through repetition. Repetition is the doorway into depth. The secret of meditating on God’s Word also lies in repetition. God says that the one who meditates on His Word day and night is blessed (Psalm 1:1–3; Joshua 1:8). Depth is found in abiding. Pause before a small flower. Gaze quietly at a single blossom. You will begin to marvel at the delicate handiwork of God within it. The longer you remain, the more you will see what you could not see before. Read a single verse, memorize it, meditate on it. Stay with it for a long time, reflecting on it from different angles. Remarkable insight will come. Do not rush. Slow down.
We can learn the wisdom of abiding from deeply rooted trees. Once planted, a tree remains in one place for a long time. If it is constantly uprooted and replanted, it cannot take root—it may even wither. But a tree quietly sends its roots deep into unseen places. Though its visible growth may seem slow, its roots grow deeper and stronger. A deeply rooted tree is not easily shaken. Depth grows in the unseen and sustains the visible life. A great tree does not obsess over speed. Slowly, as it sends its roots deeper, it eventually becomes a giant tree.
Second, depth grows not in noise, but in stillness. Without depth, life becomes noise—many words, but no resonance. Stillness is the path into depth. Speed pulls us outward, but stillness leads us inward. Our souls love stillness. A still soul is a deep soul. To enter stillness, we must train ourselves in silence. As we remain in silence and wait, our hearts gradually become quiet. Scattered thoughts gather into one, and restless emotions are calmed. In stillness, we discover not the false self, but the true self. In stillness, we come to know God more deeply. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). There is no knowledge more excellent than knowing God. To know Him is to enter into intimate communion with Him. In silence, we hear His gentle whisper. We experience the presence of the Holy Spirit, who comes softly, like a dove.
Third, stillness produces deep transformation. Rapid change collapses easily, but deep change endures. At times, it is helpful to read large portions of Scripture quickly, as it allows us to grasp the overall flow. Yet we must also learn to read the Word deeply. Deep meditation brings about deep transformation. When we meditate deeply on Scripture, it penetrates our very being. What once remained as knowledge becomes life and transforms us (Hebrews 4:12). Depth requires time, but it will never betray us. The transformation formed in stillness renews our entire lives. Lay down your pace a little. Lay down your haste. And remain in stillness.
Depth befriends time, silence, and stillness. Do not strive to go too fast. Instead, strive to grow deep. To become deep, we must pause, sit quietly, and remain before God. We need time to abide silently before His Word. In stillness, our souls are restored. In stillness, we encounter God more deeply. Depth grows not in speed, but in stillness. Today, grow quietly—yet deeply. As I lead gatherings in my home country, I often take moments of stillness. When I preach with a quieted soul, I can lead others into the deep world of the Word.
