Have thine own way Lord
Have thine own way.
Thou art the potter
I am the clay
Mold me and make me after thy will
While I am waiting yielded and still

This song was ringing in my mind this morning.

This is my prayer song today.

We have all heard “no s*x before marriage.”

But most people were never taught why. They were just threatened, shamed, or pressured. And when you only give rules without revelation, you create either rebellion or religious trauma.

God did not say “wait” to ruin pleasure. He said “wait” to protect covenant.

In Scripture, s*x is never treated like recreation. It is treated like a covenant act.

In Genesis 2:24, it says a man will leave, cleave, and the two will become one flesh. That phrase “one flesh” in Hebrew is basar echad. It is not only physical. It is the language of bonding and union. God designed intimacy to seal a relationship that is already covered by covenant.

That is why the Bible consistently ties intimacy to marriage. Not because bodies are dirty, but because union is powerful.

In the New Testament, Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 6:16 that s*xual union is not casual. He uses the Greek verb kollaō, meaning to glue, join, bond, to be welded. That is strong language. Scripture is telling you this is not just an act. It is attachment.

Then Paul uses the word porneia for s*xual immorality. In Greek, porneia is not merely “bad behavior.” It is any s*xual activity outside of God’s covenant design. The word is broader than adultery. It includes fornication, prostitution, and any union without covenant.

Now here is the part many marriages suffer from because nobody explained it.

S*x without covenant creates covenant level consequences.

You are giving wife level access to someone who has not taken husband level responsibility. You are opening your soul to someone who has not committed to protect it. And when the relationship ends, you do not just lose a person. You lose peace, clarity, confidence, sometimes even your ability to trust.

That is why many people say, “I cannot leave them,” even when it is toxic. The bond is deeper than logic. It becomes emotional, spiritual, and psychological attachment.

God’s design is not just no s*x. It is order.

Covenant first, then intimacy.
Commitment first, then access.
Covering first, then connection.

Even the biblical language for marriage highlights this.

The Hebrew idea of covenant is berit, a binding agreement. Not a vibe. Not chemistry. A covering. A responsibility. A whole life decision.

That is why Hebrews 13:4 says the marriage bed is undefiled, but s*xual sin is judged. The point is not to shame anyone. The point is to show that intimacy is holy when it is in its rightful place.

So why did God say no s*x before marriage?

Because s*x is powerful enough to blur discernment.
Because intimacy can make you ignore red flags you would have seen clearly with wisdom.
Because desire can make you call it love.
Because your body can bond you to someone your future cannot handle.

James 1:14-15 explains the progression. Desire conceives, then it gives birth to sin, and sin grows into destruction. The enemy does not tempt you with what you hate. He tempts you with what you desire. That is why boundaries are protection, not punishment.

And let us be honest.

Many relationships were forced into marriage because the church only knew how to say “stop,” but never knew how to teach “why.” So people married out of guilt, pressure, pregnancy, or fear, not purpose, friendship, alignment, or calling. And now they are living with someone they never truly discerned.

God was not trying to keep you from pleasure.
He was keeping you from pain.

Marriage is not a certificate for s*x.
Marriage is a covenant for building.

And s*x is the glue that strengthens what covenant already secured.

When you understand the why, purity stops feeling like restriction and starts feeling like wisdom.

Because the truth is not that God is trying to control you.

He is trying to cover you.
