Central City Community Outreach

Central City Community Outreach Founded in 1991, Central City Community Outreach and their collaborative partner, Central City Church

Central City Community Outreach has been working in the Skid Row corridor of downtown Los Angeles for over 20 years! Our purpose is "to build relationships that help people to thrive in skid row". We accomplish this through weekly support group meetings, one on one pastoral counseling and referrals, as well as partnering with Central City Community Church of the Nazarene for Sunday worship! Friends of Central City,
This is a post that I never wanted to happen, but with part sadness and celebration of the past 36 years, the ministry of Central City Community Church had their final worship service today, and the process will begin to shut down Central City Community Outreach in the following 60 days. Ministry has been continuing through this week, and lives are still being changed through the community of faith in skid row. Allow me to thank all of you from the depths of my heart for your amazing support over the decades that has kept this relational presence of God’s love in the heart of skid row for 36 years! Donors, staff, volunteers, and many groups who came to sing Karaoke! Words are not enough for the appreciation that I have for you and your faithfulness!

Allow me to briefly explain the journey and the alignment of the three major situations that brought us to this decision. First of all, a few months ago the owner of the facility gave us a 90 day notice to vacate, as they are wanting to change the use of the property. We have not had a lease with this new owner for the past 6 years, but have been on a month to month situation. We have submitted proposals for the purchase of a new property, but the major funds never materialized. Secondly, Pastor Tony has gone through back surgery over the past 6 months, and recovery has been difficult at 70 years of age. This has left a leadership vacuum that is difficult to fill, based on the lack of funds. Finally, beyond some amazing financial support in the past, monthly individual and organizational (churches & District) support has been decreasing post COVID and since we closed the SAY Yes! Afterschool program. This was also part of the reason that we did not entertain a new rental facility, but sensed that it was best to “go big or go home”, with a purchase of property. With this alignment of no facility, no leadership and limited funds, we are at peace to shut things down. Please pray for Pastor Tony and Lucy during these days, as well as the amazing leaders and members of the Central City ministry. Also feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions at all about this process. Thank you again for your support and faithfulness to this ministry that has impacted thousands of lives over the past 36 years!

Before I close, let me reflect. Beyond celebrating the past and remembering so many great memories, I still am praying for a new wave of young leaders who will radically reflect the inclusive love of God to all, and invest financially in our urban core. For many years, the CoN has given crumbs to starting and maintaining urban community development. Central City was begun on $200 a month and lasted 36 years by Gods grace and sacrificial staff, volunteers and donors. But that which is not watered-or invested in-does not thrive! The church and CMC’s have been the prophetic voice of compassion, justice and inclusion for ALL regardless of race, language or orientation, declaring the reality of Isaiah 61. May the “church” be a true NT church that “says welcome to the poor” Bresee.

I end with a quote of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, one of my heroes of faith:
“The Church must be the prophetic voice, which cries out “thus saith the Lord”, speaking up against injustice and violence, against oppression and exploitation, against all that dehumanizes God’s children and makes them less than what God wants them to be.”
Let it be so for future generations of our urban world.
Scott

Merry Christmas and Greetings from CCCO! -

A few weeks ago, I was driving into downtown skid row Los Angeles from the new 6th Street Viaduct. It was my first time to drive on this architecturally beautiful bridge that was renovated at a cost of approximately 588 million dollars! Beyond the bridge, along 5th & 6th street, there are new housin...

As we celebrate Thanksgiving 2023, Central City took time this past weekend for an amazing clothes give away event. In the midst of over 20 different rescue missions and agencies, the ministry and programs of Central City are MORE about the relationships developed than the item shared.
The connections with authentic, faithful, community-based individuals, who have resiliently become the volunteers who give back, is what is transformational!

Resending on this !
____________________________
I know that the terms Thanksgiving and 2020, don't really go together. How can there be Thanksgiving in a year filled with a pandemic, election divisiveness, and economic impact that hits everyone. However in skid row LA, ever day can be a difficult day. But also everyday can be a day of Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is a choice of your perspective!

When I went to visit Central City recently, I watched the daily food distribution to nearly 100 people that live in skid row! Yes, there are rescue missions that serve a meal on Thanksgiving week, but there is something different about the daily Central City food distribution program. It is filled with hospitality and THANKSGIVING, from members of the church, who know what it means to be in need!
"Whoever is kind to the needy, honors God" Proverbs 14:13.

Please watch this video of the Central City ministry, that was filmed by one of our partners, Montrose Church! Watch and be inspired: https://montrosechurch.org/blog/show-the-truth-central-city-ministry/

At Central City, we are continuing to show the love of God through daily acts of kindness, to the most broken people in the city of Los Angeles. But I need to be honest with you, it has been difficult and tiring after all of these years. Our staff is spent and extended, and our donations have decreased. We are a few months behind on our rent, due to some major donors decreasing their gifts over the past 6 months.

We NEED your help to raise nearly $50,000 over the next 36 days, to keep the daily reflection of God's love in skid row to continue, through a grass-roots, community-based ministry!

But until that final day comes, we will still daily give THANKS through acts of love and kindness, through:
Being a worshipping community of faith bringing hope and love!
Being available to people for support and counseling
Providing small group meetings (10 people) for continued addiction support and teaching
As we daily celebrate THANKSGIVING, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Will you consider a generous gift of $100 for the 100 people we serve every day? Maybe you can share more, with a gift of $500 towards our need of $50,000! We need your help to keep reflecting God's love through specific acts of kindness? Click below, the DONATE NOW button (also found at www.lacentralcity.org), or mail a gift to P.O. Box 13273, LA, CA 90013). CAN YOU ALSO CONSIDER SHARING THIS NEED IN YOUR CIRCLE OF FRIENDS! We need to expand our donors as we enter 2021!

Thank you for your prayers and support during these difficult days!

Joyfully Serving Him,
Scott
