Celebrating progress - this is the 70th anniversary of women's ordination in our tradition, and HUMC has proudly been led by amazing clergy women over the years!
Long before ordination was formally granted in 1956, women were already doing the work.
They preached in the early Wesleyan movement. They led class meetings and missionary societies. Women like Sojourner Truth, Anna Howard Shaw, and Helenor Davisson shaped the Methodist church from the ground up, without official recognition and often without credit.
This year, The United Methodist Church marks 70 years since that recognition finally came. And the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women is honoring the milestone with something the whole church can use: a free downloadable worship resource celebrating the legacy and leadership of clergywomen across the connection.
The resource features voices of women from around the world and is designed for use in local congregations, annual conferences, and ministry settings of all sizes. It's available in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, and Swahili. There is also a large-print edition.
For United Methodist congregations looking for a meaningful way to mark this anniversary, this is a beautiful place to start. And for anyone who has been shaped by the preaching, prayer, and pastoral care of a woman who answered God's call, it's worth a moment to say: we are grateful.
