Shtibl Minyan Egalitarian Jewish community and independent minyan. Joyful davening, Torah study, and justice throug

The Shtibl Minyan is an egalitarian lay-led independent minyan and Jewish community in Los Angeles whose davening attempts to fulfill the joyous Hassidic ideal of “כל עצמותי תאמרנה/with all my limbs I will say praise” (Psalms 35:10).

On Tisha b'Av, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, people of all faiths have gathered for sacred rituals of mourning at L.A. City Hall, joining in solidarity to pass the Tourism Workers Living Wage Ordinance!

Los Angeles' hotel and airport workers are struggling to survive. Their wages are hardly enough to keep up with skyrocketing rent, or to secure quality family healthcare. Each week that LA City council doesn't pass the policy, full-time tourism workers are missing out on $248/week on their paychecks on average – that much money could be the difference between making rent or getting an eviction notice.

A lot of powerful writing in this collection published by Halakhic Left and All That's Left: Anti-Occupation Collective, including a commentary of Palestinian testimonies on the book of Eichah.
I am proud to have contributed an essay along with all the other great writers and thinkers: Nathaniel Berman, Rabbi Lexie Botzum, Rabbi Sarah Brammer-Shlay, Avi Garelick, Amit Gevaryahu, Sara Klugman, Tirza Leibowitz, Shaul Magid, Rena Yehuda Newman, and Noam Weinreich.

We are more or less done with the daughters of Zelophehad, (though are we ever really done with the daughters of Zelophehad?), but we are continuing with a midrashic sugya dedicated to the sanctification of the month/shabat/the curious holiday of the fifteenth of Av and what that is all about—and it seems to be about a lot of stuff.
All in this week's daf.

What is liberation for the Jewish community this year?

This is what liberation could look like for us, the Jewish community, this year. Taking a lesson from the story of Rav Nahman that we too have the potential of Pharaonic heard-heartedness; and unlearning the idea that the Palestinians deserve the killing and the famine and the disease, that it is th...

We're still working through the halakhic details of the case of the daughters of Zelophehad, and we've added working through the details of the Josephites and their claim for more land, and others who were denied a portion in the Land of Israel. Fascinating stuff here. All in this week's daf. Join us.

There is a Jewish folk belief that what you do on Rosh Hashanah is determinative of what you will do the rest of the year. So Jewish folk, let us set this year as one of community and prayer and sweetness and joy and Torah. Shtibl services are all that. May your year be that too.

Shtibl Minyan turning out strong for the protest against ending democracy for Jewish citizens in Israel*. 10% of our community turned.
*Democracy for Palestinians and the end of the occupation was apparently put off for another protest.
