Equally retrospective and forward-looking, this concert features a program that includes the world premieres of “Spiritual Spaces” for oud and “Victoria Dispensary” for voice, both backed by Alan’s six-piece jazz band.

Alongside the “Moon Walk” and “Camel Walk” projects, which feature Chinese instrumental soloists, “Spiritual Spaces” marks Alan’s first musical narrative centered around a Middle Eastern instrument, drawing on spiritual insights from his travels to various sacred sites.

“Victoria Dispensary” was Inspired by Alan’s grandmother—known by her English name, Anna—who once worked as a salesperson in a Western-style pharmacy in Hong Kong, the psycho-comedy “Victoria Dispensary” interweaves the satirical 1876 song “Ching Chow Chung” with slapstick toy-hammer fights between musicians. It’s a musical skirmish where time, culture, and comedy collide—and no side escapes untouched.

Friends in Southern California and beyond, I arrived in Los Angeles yesterday and my concert here is tomorrow. It has been heartbreaking to see the devastation and destruction caused by the fires. Over 12,000 buildings have been destroyed, and the number of families that have lost everything is unimaginable. I've been on the fence about going forward with my concert this past week and have been keeping a close eye on the situation. After consulting with the venue and organizer, we have decided to convert this concert into a fundraiser to support the music community, in particular, those who have been affected. I hope everyone is well and take care!
