JEMS (Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society)

JEMS (Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society) The vision of JEMS:
Jesus to every Japanese, Jesus every day. Headquartered in Los Angeles, JEMS is a non-profit, para-church organization.

In May of 1950, JEMS (Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society) was born at Mount Hermon as ministers met and prayed. After World War II, they had a dream to rebuild their churches, evangelize their communities, and send the gospel of Christ back to Japan through the sending of missionaries. Today, seventy years later, God has honored that dream and more, as JEMS now involves all Asians through its

ministries with the local church, on college campuses, through conferences and retreats, and many other programs and ministries. Sharing the gospel overseas has also expanded with the development of many programs and the inclusion of South America as another mission field. It is supported by an interdenominational network of Japanese and Asian American churches and especially by individual supporters.

What are the benefits of online church? Today we talk with Kengoro Goto, the son of a pastor who decided to have 12 kids because Jesus had 12 disciples. We discuss this, his doctoral studies research in OT, and the developing Japanese demographic problems that can be partially alleviated through the use of recent technology.

Here is a glance of JEMS Missionaries Todd and Jayne Fong's Ministry!

In many ways, our lives are not so different from the lives of Christians living in the US. We go to work regularly. We attend church every week and find ways to use our skills and experience to serve. We build community with people who may not have had a chance to hear the gospel before. The main difference is we are doing it in a country where only a tiny minority of people are Christians.

Jayne serves an extremely underserved population in Japan: children with special speech and communication needs and their families. Working with an array of families from international schools, ministry workers, and people she connected with through the church, she provides therapy and consultations in an area where Japan is lagging behind the US. We can't show any photos for privacy reasons, of course!

If you're reading this on social media, you already understand the value and power of good imagery when it comes to communication. Todd finds opportunities to serve various ministries, non-profits, and church-related activities through photography, providing professional-level photography pro bono. He shoots events such as gospel concerts and film festivals and does a portrait photography event at the church around Christmas. He also uses photography as a way to connect with others outside the church and build community.

Among the church-related ministries they are involved in, the largest is the English Summer Camp, now in its 7th year (after a 4 year COVID "break"). This 6-day camp serves families with preschool and elementary aged children, providing a fun way to learn both English and foundational knowledge of the gospel message. With hundreds of children attending every year and dozens of volunteers from the US, local churches, and our neighborhood community, this is a huge opportunity to create community and spiritual conversation each year, and most importantly, give the children and families of our community a gospel foundation from which they can seek to know Christ more in the future if they desire.

JEMS Missionaries Tommy and Yumi Morse are new missionaries since 2025. They have been working alongside David and Yuka Mills at JLodge in Kanagawa, Japan. Here's the update from them:

1. Here’s a snapshot of the JLodge team meeting — working together and moving forward as a team!
2. David underwent surgery in October due to tremors in his hand. After the operation, the left side of his body was paralyzed for a while, and he went through a very difficult time.
3. Tommy also arrived safely in Japan. The picture is from David’s hospital discharge celebration barbecue. We have also started learning café work from David and Yuka.
4. We held a Thanksgiving party and invited those who helped with our move to Japan. The photo shows a turkey made with vegetables.
5. Tommy has started an ‘English conversation time’ at the café.

Please pray that the Lord will strengthen and guide Tommy and Yumi as they continue to serve alongside David and Yuka Mills at JLodge. Please continue to pray for David's health and recovery.
