This Member Monday, we’re excited to spotlight the Bender Family - Craig, Melissa, Ariella, and Isabella!

Hi! For those who don't know us, we are the Bender family! My wife and I grew up in Reform Jewish households on opposite sides of the country (Craig in NY and Melissa here in Los Angeles). We raised our children very culturally Jewish, but hadn't returned to regularly joining a synagogue until it was time for our 9-year-old to start religious school and Bat Mitzvah pre-training. We tried a lot of places, and everything felt too religious, or not religious enough, or just not us.

With TBH it was just right, and we found our home. It was right after things had opened up post-Covid when a friend suggested we try TBH. We went to a themed Shabbat in the yard and it was love at first night! It was a Beatles-themed Shabbat. Everyone was wearing tie-dye, the kids were drawing with chalk on the parking lot and tie-dyeing challah covers. Every prayer was played with a band to the tune of a Beatles song, which as a musician was music to my ears and such a fun, fresh take on a service. The thing that struck me the most, though, was the clergy — two female rabbis, plus Leah and other leaders. My wife and I grew up only with male rabbis and cantors, so seeing female leaders felt like the perfect role models for our two young girls.

After that, we dressed up for a Disney-themed Shabbat, and while I was singing all the songs loudly, I got recruited by the rabbi to join the choir. I have performed in the High Holiday and Shabbat adult chorus ever since as well as participated in the Purim Shpiel living my dream of playing Aladdin. We love all the festive Shabbats! I love that you can be as involved or uninvolved as you want to be. We have participated in book clubs, hiking clubs, volunteer work, and Seder in the Mountains, where my younger daughter Isabella got in on the singing action — which has now become an annual tradition. Oh, and that 9-year-old can now be found as a CIT at Camp Wonder or as a religious school Ozeret (class helper). As for me, I'll see you singing out from the bimah this High Holiday season, or at another Shabbat soon!

This Member Monday, we’re happy to spotlight the Stein Family — Justin, Paige, Hayley, and Myles!

Justin’s connection to TBH began in 2008, when he joined the community as a songleader. Years later, when Justin and Paige started their family, they knew they wanted their children to attend the schools at TBH and grow up in the same community that had embraced them. They officially became members in 2024.

As a mixed family, the Steins have always felt welcomed with open arms and surrounded by love and kindness. They have been overjoyed with the experience Hayley and Myles have had in the schools at TBH and the community their family has found here.

For the Stein family, what stands out most about TBH is its diversity and inclusivity. They are grateful to call it home.

Today we’re saying a bittersweet goodbye to Nolan after 8 incredible years at TBH!

If you’ve spent any time at TBH, chances are you know Nolan — and Nolan definitely knows you! Over the years, he has become such an important part of our community, always ready with a friendly smile, a helping hand, and a genuine love for the people who make TBH so special.

Nolan, thank you for 8 years of dedication to our community. You will be greatly missed, and we’re wishing you nothing but the best in your next adventure! Please join us in wishing Nolan well!

For our very first Member Monday, we’re excited to spotlight the Haimovitz family — David, Jo, Jacob, and Darah!
The Haimovitz family joined TBH in 2004. After belonging to a few different synagogues in the Valley, David and Jo began looking for a community with a Religious School for Jacob and Darah. A friend at the JCC recommended TBH, and they quickly found a community that felt accepting, welcoming, and patient.
Over the years, TBH has become an important part of their lives. David and Jo especially value the community they’ve found at Shabbat services, TBH’s blend of Reform Judaism and tradition, and, of course, the music!
Neither David nor Jo expected to become quite so involved in their Jewish community, but more than 20 years later, they certainly have! David currently serves as President of TBH, and Jo is a past president of Women of TBH and a member of our choir.
We’re so grateful to have the Haimovitz family as part of our TBH community!
