HISTORY

The church that we now know as All Peoples Christian Church can trace its roots back to the early twentieth century. The neighborhood surrounding the Japanese Christian Church and Japanese Christian Institute was hard hit by the interment of Japanese Americans during World War II. With the support of the United Christian Missionary Fund, the Reverend Dan Genung responded to the call and c

ame to Los Angeles. Under Reverend Genung’s faithful leadership and in response to the needs expressed by the neighbors, All Peoples Christian Center opened a day care center in 1942 and now, offering a wide variety of services, is one of America’s oldest and most trusted faith-based community organizations. Dan Genung was also instrumental in reviving the church and All Peoples Christian Church held its first worship service in 1946. All Peoples continues to embrace the vision of being a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, inclusive community of faith. WHAT WE BELIEVE:

All Peoples Christian Church is a progressive community of faith. We recognize that God loves and accepts every person and that the ministry of Jesus included all people, even those excluded by society. All Peoples Christian Church is an Open and Affirming community where we continue to strive to be a living mosaic of faith, hope, and love. We seek God’s guidance and covenant with one another to welcome all people at the Table and into the full life and ministry of the church without regard to sexual orientation, gender identity, social or economic status, physical or mental abilities, age, heritage, or country of origin. As a progressive Christian Community of faith:
By calling ourselves progressive Christians, we mean we are Christians who…
1. Believe that following the path of the teacher Jesus can lead to healing and wholeness, a mystical connection to “God,” as well as an awareness and experience of not only the Sacred, but the Oneness and Unity of all life;
2. Affirm that the teachings of Jesus provide but one of many ways to experience “God,” the Sacredness, Oneness and Unity of life, and that we can draw from diverse sources of wisdom, including Earth, in our spiritual journey;
3. Seek and create community that is inclusive of ALL people, including but not limited to:
Conventional Christians and questioning skeptics,
Believers and agnostics,
Those of all races, cultures, and nationalities
Those of all sexual orientations and all gender identities,
Those of all classes and abilities,
Those historically marginalized,
All creatures and plant life;
4. Know that the way we behave towards one another and Earth is the fullest expression of what we believe, therefore we vow to walk as Jesus might have walked in this world with radical compassion, inclusion, and bravery to confront and positively change the injustices we experience as well as those we see others experiencing;
5. Find grace in the search for understanding and believe there is more value in questioning with an open mind and open heart, than in absolutes or dogma;
6. Work toward peace and justice among all people and all life on Earth;
7. Protect and restore the integrity of our Earth and all of Creation;
8. Commit to a path of life-long learning, compassion, and selfless love on this journey toward a personally authentic and meaningful faith. Beliefs and Practices usually associated with Disciples include:

* Open Communion. The Lord’s Supper, or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship. At All Peoples Christian Church we invite everyone to share in the in this holy meal, with the understanding that Christ is found in the breaking of the bread. We are united by our desire to follow the model of Jesus Christ and to worship God through his example. Persons are free to follow Christ’s teachings guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, and prayer, and are expected to extend that freedom to others.
* Baptism by immersion. Baptism is the outward sign of an inner conviction. It is the visible expression of the covenant between God, believer, and Church. In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside and a new life of trust in God begins. Although we practice baptism by immersion, we affirm and accept other baptism traditions.
* Belief in the oneness of the Church. All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
* The ministry of believers. Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service, and spiritual growth.

With heavy hearts, we announce the closing of All Peoples Christian Church this month after nearly 80 years of serving our beloved community. All Peoples has been a national beacon of hope, fighting against injustice and inequality while seeking peace and fulfilling the Gospel. The church has been of deep and faithful service, inspired by Isaiah 56:7: “My house shall be a house of prayer for all people,” where ALL are welcome. Keep a lookout for upcoming special events to honor and celebrate our community presence over the past 80 years.
