Looking Back, Looking Forward: 25 years of ICUJP

For 25 years, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace has mobilized, advocated, and educated faith and secular communities under the motto that Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.

Over our quarter-century, our biggest asset has been the wonderful people who have worked diligently for upholding the values of justice for all and malice toward none - those that congregated in the basement of a church, or passed out flyers in the street, or raised their voices against hate, sometimes at personal risk. In one word, our biggest asset has been: YOU.

Please join us as we celebrate you and your support of our work together, revisit our past, and envision what the future holds.

As Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace celebrates 25 years of action and advocacy for a kinder and more just world, we want to remember those that were on this journey from the start - the people that came together just after the horrors of September 11th, 2001, and saw that the faith and activist communities needed to speak with one voice, and say that Religious Communities Must Stop Blessing War and Violence.

JOIN US AS WE HONOR:

- Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories

- Stephen Rohde, constitutional lawyer, lecturer, writer and political activist.

- Chris Ponnet, Director St. Camillus Center for Spiritual Care/LAC+USC Medical Center (posthumously)

- Bishop John Taylor, former Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles

- Rick Steves, travel writer, activist, and host of Rick Steves' Europe on PBS

- Pasadena For Palestine, a grassroots organization that advocates for Palestinian rights and raises awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Palestine.

We hope that you will join us on Sunday, September 27th, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, as we look back to our founding, look forward to the task ahead, and honor courageous peacemakers who keep our struggle for justice and peace alive.

Mom's Club, a new documentary from Romano and co-director Miranda Winters, tells the story of a group of mothers who came together to find out who kept showing up to protest and disrupt Southern California school boards in 2022 and 2023.

By his recollection, Romano covered almost 300 protests in and around Los Angeles after the June 2020 murder of George Floyd.

The right-wing backlash to the Black Lives Matter protest movement that followed — against BLM, then masks, then vaccines — by 2022 had coalesced around protesting inclusive LGBTQ+ policies in schools.

The documentary reveals how well-funded Christian Nationalist groups, such as the Heritage Foundation, the Koch brothers, and the DeVoss family, use their money to target small towns and rile up locals against people who are not straight, white, or even adults.
