Hi friends, each week we want to highlight something from one of the Remain podcasts. Here is a short snippet from one of our episodes that you can check out on Spotify. We love that Psalm 88 is in the Bible. It’s heavy and dark but God is ok with that. We hope this can encourage your heart today.

Trina here, I am slowly reading through Suffering is Never for Nothing by Elizabeth Elliot. It’s not an easy read, it’s not light Summer reading. Nobody wants to hear that the way to a deeper walk Jesus is often a path marked with pain, nobody wants that, many of us might say ‘I am ok thanks.’. But there is a truth to these words that runs deep. There is still a richness and sweetness in the darkness of that path. What I admire so far is Elliot is not out to give trite answers. No, she says if you look at the world and the pain so many live through and experience it’s really very difficult, on account of all that to believe in a God out there who is loving and good, I would say it’s almost impossible. The only way we can keep believing in God being who He says He is, is by faith and on account of His Word the Bible. So here is to plodding along when the answers are not there. To looking for God and the glimpses of Him in the deepest waters and hottest fires. He can be found there, more than that, He wants to be found by us there.

Jesus is alive forevermore. He lives. He lives. He lives. Shout it from the rooftops. Sing it out with your whole heart. Revel in the beauty of it. Remember it when you rise up. Recall it in the seemingly mundane. Hold onto it when you tread in darkness. Whisper it to a hurting soul, maybe your own. Share it with those around you. Keep it close when you are exhausted. Use it as a shield when the deceiver comes. Remain steadfast in it. He lives. He lives. He lives. You can spend a lifetime searching but you won’t find better news. O death where is your sting?

Some thoughts from us Remain With Us to ponder on this Holy Saturday.

Today is Saturday. The day after the crucifixion and the day before the Resurrection. It’s the day in the middle. A day to lean into the tension and the discomfort and wait. A day to realize our best efforts cannot fix our lives and moreover they cannot save a broken world. A day we come face to face when with the depravity and complicit guilt deep in our own souls.

We realize our part in holding a sinless Savior upon a tree. A day when we weep and then hold our collective breath, how could this be His end? Will a dead Jesus save us? What will be our end, left to our own devices? Can hope spring forth from these dark ashes? Can light break upon our weary black souls? Can all that is wrong be made right? Can good triumph over evil?

To all appearances the answer to these questions is an emphatic ‘No’. It’s done. It’s over. Death is the final word of the day, the nail in the coffin so to speak. But God
… God delights in turning a situation upon its head. He delights in making a way out of no way. He delights in turning impossibilities and dead ends to serve purposes beyond our imagination.

And so we wait here, leaning hard into our limitations, we wait to see what God will do. We crane our necks to catch a glimpse of Him, with bated breath, in agony of spirit. We wait. We wait. Tomorrow is coming, indeed it’s almost here.

It’s Holy Week… we remember Jesus and the road He walked on his way to the cross for us. He who had (and still has) all the strength in the universe said yes to emptying Himself of His majesty, for us. He was insulted, vilified, spat upon, pinched, chased and as one without strength for us. If this was the reception our Savior received here, why do we long for and seek acclaim. Like master, like servant. Paul takes pleasure in his weakness, it is his becoming more like Christ. It’s beautiful and it’s what this world needs.

Just take a moment to read the quote above again... If you know anything about the story of the man who said these words, well you can suffice it to say that there certainly appeared to be many times that God failed him in some way. Oh but never ever ever did He once. Praise be to the God who stays with us, the God who is in it for the long haul, and the same God of George Mueller who ‘enables us to trust’. Our trust, which God himself upholds, in the midst of dark trials is proof of His never failing us. Can I get an amen?
