EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES

LUNCH WORKSHOP SERIES
2018

THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 12:00 P.M.

The "White-Savior" Critique: Whither Episcopal Mission?

This workshop will engage the issues posed by Nigerian-American writer Neju Cole in his often-cited 2012 The Atlantic piece "The White Savior Industrial Complex." In the article, Cole "takes aim at the long history of Americans using Africa as 'a backdrop for white fantasies of conquest and heroism.' In their zeal to 'make a difference,' Cole argues, the members of the White-Savior Industrial Complex, which include TED talkers and development economists, journalists and international charities, have tended to seize on dramatic measures that attract tons of media attention and donor funds but don't actually help Africans." - The New Yorker, January 22, 2018. Prior to the workshop, attendees are encouraged to read Cole's article, available at: https://www. theatlantic.com /international /archive/2012/03/ the-white-savior-industrial-complex/254843/.

There is no cost to attend, but space is limited and pre-registration required. To register, please e-mail Troy Elder, Bishop's Legate for Global Partnership, with your name and parish or other affiliation, at [email protected], no later than March 6. Prior to the workshop, attendees are encouraged to read Cole’s article, available at: https://www. theatlantic.com /international /archive/2012/03/ the-white-savior-industrial-complex/254843/.

Future workshop topics will include "Fostering Agency (and Accountability) With Overseas Mission Partners," set for June, and "God Loves Uganda: “Gender Ideology” in Episcopal/Anglican Mission?," planned for September. For updated information about the series, please visit the Program Group on Global Partnership page at (https://www.facebook.com/EDLAPGGP/).

A note from Father Irnel this morning:

Dear Mother Patricia , Madame Serena and Maître Troy,

I greet you in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus-Christ.
Flocks in Mission Sainte Croix have a special thought of you and the people in California, in our service this morning: We prayed for People in California and those who suffer from this disaster. We watched TV this week and we see how since five days fire destroys forest, what people own and life.
We are very sad and express our solidarity to you in this difficult moment.
We hope you are safe and well.
May God protect you.
Your brother in Christ: Father Irnel Duveaux

So wonderful to visit our partner Holy Cross Mission in Jeremie, Haiti recently. What an inspiration, particularly at this time in California, to be in solidarity with those who have also faced deadly natural disasters.

Global Partnership group
seeks aid for Haitian refugees

At the request of Bishop James R. Mathes, the Diocese of San Diego is seeking in-kind donations for the growing numbers of Haitian refugees at the U.S./Mexico border. Many of these men, women and children are earthquake survivors who were employed by Brazil's construction industry in preparation for the Olympics. Now they find themselves unemployed, poor and sleeping in the streets of Baja while they await entry to the US and the opportunity to be reunited with family members. The devastation wrought by Hurricane Matthew last month has only worsened their situation and that of their families in Haiti. The Program Group on Global Partnership of the Diocese of Los Angeles is working with the Diocese of San Diego to collect rice, beans, tuna, chicken, Cup O' Noodles, socks, feminine hygiene items, toiletries, baby formula, and diapers. In Los Angeles, donations can be dropped off at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles, from now until Thanksgiving. To schedule a drop-off, contact Troy E. Elder, bishop's legate for global partnership, at 213.482.2040, ext. 245, or [email protected].

Scenes from just south of the border here. As I've posted before, the Haitian stories are particularly compelling. If you'd like to help via donations, etc., currently the main needs are: rice, beans, tuna, chicken, Cup O' Noodles, socks, feminine hygiene items, toiletries, baby formula and diapers. Donations can be dropped off at: Christ Methodist Church, 3295 Meade Ave., San Diego, or, for those further afield, please e-mail the guy at the end of the video (spoiler alert: me) at [email protected]. They also welcome monetary donations made payable to "Christ Methodist Church."
