Verdugo Community Church

Verdugo Community Church A church that makes and grows disciples by loving and living in community with our neighbors. We are a community dedicated to growth.

A place where hopelessness turns to hope. A place where God is at work making all things new. Whether its feeding the neighborhood through our monthly food distribution, advocating for the immigrant through our plans to open a non-profit legal immigration assistance office, sharing our gifts and the divine creativity in all of us through our Open Mic Nights, learning and reflecting on what it mean

s to be human in God's world through our monthly Movie Nights, or doing life together through our new dedication to small groups, we are a church dedicated to reaching out as we grow to become more like Christ within. Where we may lack in size we make up for in heart and love as a family with open arms to those around us. Come and be a part of something new. God is bringing new life to this place, and you can be a part of it!

Pastor Gail Linstrom begins the service by welcoming all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds focuses us with a reading from Psalm 33. Albert Ramseyer opens us in prayer. Kristina James, Ed Manacop, and Caroline Sandoval lead us in joyous singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of our church, our city, and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail concludes our service by leading us in Communion, and you are invited to participate.

In her sermon, “A Voice for All,” Pastor Gail reminds us of the power of words to help or hurt others. In Genesis the story of the Tower of Babel explains how humanity was separated by a multitude of languages. In Acts 2 at Pentecost this was reversed when the Holy Spirit entered into the lives and hearts of those first believers, who began to speak the message of God’s love everyone, whatever their native language. As Jesus explained to the disciples in John 14, the Holy Spirit is given to each believer, enabling them to use their spiritual gifts to share God’s love with others in whatever situation they find themselves. Our responsibility to to follow through with this, because God’s love is an action verb.

Pastor Gail Linstrom begins the service by welcoming all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Pastor Gail, Luisa Fernandez, Caroline Sandoval, and Ed Manacop leads us in a Responsive Call to Worship. Dale Reynolds focuses us with a reading from Psalm 104. Luisa opens us in prayer. Ed and Caroline lead us in joyous singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of our church, our city, and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail concludes our service by leading us in Communion, and you are invited to participate.

In his sermon, “Written on the Heart,” Chaplain David Saltzman reminds us that Pentecost was celebrated as the day God gave Moses the Law, written on stone tablets. In Acts 2 Pentecost was given a new meaning when God expanded his relationship with us by putting his Spirit directly into our hearts. Jesus promised in John 7 that through the Spirit we would have rivers of living water to meet our thirst for God’s love. The Law included the command to love our neighbors and the foreigners living with us, as ourselves. We must rely upon the Spirit to help us learn to love ourselves as God loves us, and then spread that to others.

In her sermon, “We Are Awakened...Now What?” Pastor Gail uses the post-Easter narrative in the Gospels to show how Jesus continued to equip and train his disciples to carry the good news throughout the world with the help of the Holy Spirit. Peter in 1 Peter 4 and Paul in 1 Corinthians 12 remind us that the Spirit creates the whole body of the Church by gifting each person with the special abilities. If we are to be a healthy community and complete the work that Jesus wants us to do in the world, the members of the church must work together and encourage each other.

Pastor Gail Linstrom begins our service by welcoming all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family on this Mother’s Day and leads us in a Responsive Call to Worship. Albert Ramseyer focuses us with a reading from Psalm 86. Luisa Fernandez opens us in prayer. Ed Manacop, Caroline Sandoval, and Rodolfo Diaz lead us in joyous singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of our church, our city, and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail concludes our service by leading us in Communion, and you are invited to participate.

In his sermon, “The Whole Image” Chaplain David Saltzman looks at the story in John 8 of the woman accused of adultery to remind us that both women and men were created in the image of God and should receive equal treatment by others. Jesus does not join in the attack on this woman. Instead he challenges her accusers to acknowledge their own sins and need for forgiveness, rather than to judge. When they leave, shamed by this rejoinder, Jesus does not condemn the woman either. We need to affirm the role of women in our churches, places of employment, and leadership so that the whole image of God found in humanity finds its full expression.

Pastor Gail Linstrom begins our service by welcoming all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family and leads us in a Responsive Call to Worship from Psalm 118. Dale Reynolds focuses us with a reading from Psalm 116. Luisa Fernandez opens us in prayer. Marvin Juan, Ed Manacop, Caroline Sandoval, and Rodolfo Diaz lead us in joyous singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of our church, our city, and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail concludes our service by leading us in Communion, and you are invited to participate.

In his sermon, “What Do We Do Now?” Chaplain David Saltzman uses the reaction of the crowd to Peter’s sermon in Acts 2 to remind us how we should spread the gospel. In that sermon the crowd is confronted with their role in the crucifixion of Jesus, as well as the good news that God raised him from the dead. When they ask what they should do going forward, Peter admonishes them to repent of their sins, avoid entanglement with the corruption in their society, and accept the Holy Spirit. Three thousand did so that very day, kickstarting the new church. The message has not changed, and as we bring the gospel to others, we like the early church are assured that God will be working with us.
