Verdugo Community Church A church that makes and grows disciples by loving and living in community with our neighbors. We are a community dedicated to growth.

A place where hopelessness turns to hope. A place where God is at work making all things new. Whether its feeding the neighborhood through our monthly food distribution, advocating for the immigrant through our plans to open a non-profit legal immigration assistance office, sharing our gifts and the divine creativity in all of us through our Open Mic Nights, learning and reflecting on what it mean

s to be human in God's world through our monthly Movie Nights, or doing life together through our new dedication to small groups, we are a church dedicated to reaching out as we grow to become more like Christ within. Where we may lack in size we make up for in heart and love as a family with open arms to those around us. Come and be a part of something new. God is bringing new life to this place, and you can be a part of it!

Pastor Gail Linstrom begins our service by welcoming all to worship and to participate in the life of our church family. Dale Reynolds focuses us with a reading from Psalm 7. Luisa Fernandez opens us in prayer. Ed Manacop leads us in joyous singing. Greg Hart takes up the praises and concerns of our church, our city, and our world in the Prayers of the People. Pastor Gail concludes our service by leading us in Communion, and you are invited to participate.

In his sermon, “Learning to See,” Chaplain David Saltzman looks deeper into the admonition of Jesus found in Matthew 7 against judging others when you are ignoring your own flaws. We all find it easy to judge others, even people we do not know anything about except a group name. We project our own flaws and sins on them. Jesus is reminding us that we should not ignore our own flaws, and should avoid judging others. Instead we should see them as God’s children, loved by him who is always ready to forgive and redeem us.

In his sermon, “Lord, Save Me: What Faith Actually Looks Like,” Pastor Brian Scott from Foothill Church uses the episode in Matthew 14 of Jesus, and briefly Peter, walking on the water in a storm, to illustrate what faith means. The disciples were afraid of who was walking on the water toward them until Jesus told them to not be afraid, just as God reveals himself to us in times of trial. Peter asked to join Jesus on the water, and Jesus told him to come out of the boat. Peter had faith he could do it but almost immediately saw that the storm was raging and as he began to sink asked Jesus to save him. Jesus did, they regained the boat, and the storm ceased. When Jesus chided Peter for having doubted, it meant that he was pulled in two directions over what he experienced, not that he did not believe that Jesus would save him. We likewise need to act out our faith in times of peacefulness and storm.

In her sermon, “Not Your Ordinary Church Picnic!,” Pastor Gail looks at the familiar story of the miraculous feeding of the Five Thousand in John 6 as a way to describe how God wants us to respond to the challenges we face. Seeing the crowd coming toward them, Jesus asks his disciples if they can see a way to feed the multitude. They cannot see any way to do this and the best resource they find is a boy’s lunch of five small barley loaves and two salted fish. Jesus takes this offering, graciously organizes the crowd, prays over the food and distributes it, fully satisfying the hunger of the multitude with left overs. This miracle, the only one mentioned in all four Gospels, reminds us that when we, individually and as a church, feel lead to take action, we must bring whatever resources we have to God, and rely on his power to accomplish what he needs done.
